Last year’s Resident Evil 2 remake was a real triumph. It wasn’t just a modern horror, but a careful reimagining of a classic that captivated both fans and critics. We even named it Game of the Year! Naturally, hopes for the updated third part were high, albeit with the understanding that it would be difficult to repeat last year’s delight. But here’s what really came as a surprise: Resident Evil 3 Remake turned out to be not just different, but surprisingly distant from both its predecessor and the original.

Back in 1999, Capcom released Resident Evil 3, continuing the story of Jill Valentine, one of the main characters from the first part. While her partner Chris Redfield went abroad (and got into the events of Resident Evil Code: Veronica), Jill stayed in Raccoon City… and, by an incredible coincidence, managed to sleep through the beginning of the zombie apocalypse. But there is no time to figure out how this happened – the city streets are engulfed in a wave of chaos: houses are engulfed in flames, roads are blocked by barricades, and the population is literally rotting before our eyes, having become victims of a virus developed by the Umbrella Corporation. And as if that were not enough, a virtually invulnerable monster in a black cloak comes out to hunt for Jill.

Unlike the peaceful citizens, Jill understands perfectly well who is behind this catastrophe. Umbrella is to blame, having been developing biological weapons in secret laboratories for years. However, the irony of fate is that her only potential allies are the mercenaries of the corporation itself. Formally, they arrived to help the survivors, but in reality they were simply sent to the slaughter so that the management could collect more data on the monsters in the field. Together with them, Umbrella introduced its most deadly toy into the city – Nemesis. This terrible mutant is not only incredibly tenacious, but also knows how to use weapons, follow orders and, worst of all, ruthlessly pursue its target. And its goal is simple: to destroy everyone who survived the events of the first part. Jill Valentine, of course, is on this list.

The modern remake of Resident Evil 3 carefully preserves the plot, but significantly reworks the details. As in the case of Resident Evil 2 (2019), the developers tried to give the events more logic and coherence. Although after the final credits, players still have questions, the remake’s script turned out to be much more thoughtful than in the original. The Umbrella mercenaries have been especially transformed. If before they looked like faceless extras, now they have acquired character: experienced commander Mikhail, cruel and calculating Nikolai, as well as Carlos – a cynical but kind guy who more than once helps Jill out of trouble. Moreover, he became the second playable character. However, even with the increased number of dialogues between him and the main character, there is no special “chemistry” – they mainly discuss pressing problems. And there are enough of them, to put it mildly.

Indeed, Jill’s escape plans seem like a looping nightmare:

1. Turn on the power plant.
2. Escape from Nemesis.
3. Direct the subway train.
4. Escape from Nemesis.
5. Find survivors.
6. Escape from Nemesis.

And so on in a circle, until it’s either you or him.

Resident Evil 3 (2020): action instead of horror?

The original Resident Evil 3 gameplay was more like a major expansion to the second part: the same engine, the same mechanics, similar scenery. However, the developers still added a few interesting features. For example, you could choose how Jill would act in critical moments – this gave a reason to play the game several times. But in the remake, they abandoned such mechanics: here everything is strictly on rails, without options.

If you think about it, the new Resident Evil 3 is the complete opposite of the remake of the second part. There, the gameplay was built on constant tension: each room had to be cleared carefully, save resources and flinch at every sound. It would seem that in the updated trio we will find something similar, but the developers chose a different path. There are practically no complex puzzles and thoughtful exploration – but there is more than enough shooting. As a result, the game is perceived not as a horror, but rather as an action movie with elements of survival horror.

In addition, some mechanics have become simpler. There is no more blue grass that saved you from poisoning, and the ability to protect yourself from bites with a knife or grenade has disappeared. You still have to run around the levels looking for keys and switches, but the route is too obvious. Usually, the item you need is at the end of the corridor, and after you pick it up, the game itself leads you back to the place where you need to use it. Puzzles are kept to a minimum – you don’t have to think much.

It has also become easier with the inventory: although it is limited, additional slots open quickly, and there are so few important items that there is no problem with choosing at all. Take a couple of guns, ammo, a first aid kit, a lockpick and a key – and there is still room left. Zombies are still too tenacious, but now it is not so scary: the characters know how to deftly dodge, and there is an abundance of ammo – they are literally lying underfoot, plus they are easy to craft. There is enough ammunition even to make control shots at every dead person you meet.

Overall, if you compare the remake to the original, you can highlight several key changes:

• The game has become noticeably more linear, with virtually no options for completing it.
• Puzzles have been reduced to a minimum, and searching for items has been simplified.
• The amount of action has increased, but the tension of the horror has decreased.
• There are more ammo and resources, which is why there is no longer a need to save.
• Some mechanics, such as blue grass and protective items, have been cut.

As a result, Resident Evil 3 (2020) is more like a dynamic action game than a real survival horror. Yes, it is still a good game, but in terms of tension and elaboration, it is clearly inferior to the remake of the second part.

Nemesis Isn’t Scary Anymore? What Went Wrong in Resident Evil 3 Remake

Even the immortal Nemesis is no longer scary. At one time, he was remembered by players much more than the Tyrant from the second part – all because he was constantly pursuing Jill, moving after her from room to room and not giving her a second of respite even during the exploration of the city. It seemed that this monster literally senses where the heroine is, and always remains on her tail.

But in the remakes, everything turned out exactly the opposite. Now the Tyrant acts unexpectedly, inexorably step by step approaching his victim, but Nemesis, on the contrary, appears strictly according to the script. It is almost impossible to meet him by chance on the streets of the city – if he does appear, then exclusively in scripted scenes, for example, to effectively overtake Jill in another chase. Yes, such episodes look much more spectacular than in the original, but at the same time they lose some of their horror – it is too obvious that this is a production. However, this is even for the better. It’s worth trying to really run away from Nemesis around the city, and it becomes clear: his artificial intelligence is stuck in 1999. He is absurdly predictable, and he moves through the doors that are provided for him so slowly that the player can simply mock him – for example, methodically slash him with a knife.

The funniest thing is that in some scenes Nemesis does not react to what is happening at all. For example, he calmly waits behind the glass while Jill slowly cleans out the toy store. All this makes the new Resident Evil 3 similar to Tomb Raider 2013. There, Lara Croft also suffered endlessly: she was wounded, fell, found herself in traps, but all this happened without the player’s participation. This cinematic approach can be perceived in different ways:

• For some, this is a plus – the staged scenes look spectacular and add drama.
• For others, it is rather a minus, because the player is turned into a passive observer.
• And some are simply disappointed that the third part of the remake did not follow the same bold path as the second, avoiding the trends of modern AAA games.

Whatever your point of view, one thing is clear: Resident Evil 3 remake is a completely different game than its predecessor.

Resident Evil 3 Remake: Pros, Cons, and Overall Verdict

The Resident Evil 2 remake treated the original with care — the developers updated old locations and cutscenes, but preserved their spirit and recognition. But Resident Evil 3 Remake took a different path: instead of improving, it replaced most of the old content with new. In some moments, this worked to the game’s advantage — for example, the script became more dynamic. But the cut content is a shame. The city streets have changed beyond recognition — okay, let’s say. But where is the clock tower? Where did the factory and park go? They were simply cut out.

And even those rare street segments that remained were noticeably shortened. For example, the scene with extinguishing the burning asphalt is one of the few where you can feel the atmosphere of the destroyed Raccoon City. But it was almost entirely shown in the demo version. All this affects the duration: the remake literally flies before your eyes. The campaign is shorter than either of the two scenarios in RE2, taking less than five hours. And when you realize during the credits that there is no more single-player content here — they didn’t even bring the “Mercenaries” mode — all that’s left is a confused: “Is that all?”

To be fair, Resident Evil 3 Remake is enjoyable to play. The game doesn’t overload you with key searches, doesn’t force you to save ammo, throws in spectacular scenes and new enemies. It’s lively, fast-paced, and doesn’t have time to get boring. But at the same time, it doesn’t leave you with strong emotions. Unlike the classic Resident Evil 3 and even the RE2 remake, this project seems to have forgotten its horror roots and turned into another blockbuster. Just another one.
