Dead or Alive 6
Once upon a time, when I first saw the original Dead or Alive on the SEGA Dreamcast, I honestly didn’t really understand what this game could grab my attention. Well, except, perhaps, for the outstanding moves of Kasumi, who was clearly trying to compete with Mai Shiranui from Fatal Fury in the art of escaping from her own dress. Years passed, new parts of the series were released, but they passed me by – Dead or Alive remained the prerogative of the Xbox, and I was far from this platform. Even when I finally got my hands on the original Xbox, the situation did not change – I simply caught up with several titles that interested me, but Dead or Alive was not among them.
Real interest awakened later, when Team Ninja released Ninja Gaiden Sigma for the PlayStation 3. Having bought the game almost immediately after acquiring the console, I stubbornly completed it – and, of course, not without a series of good curses addressed to the developers. And then I learned that the worlds of Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive are closely intertwined, and that Ryu Hayabusa had been wreaking havoc at DOATEC tournaments long before the reboot of his series. Curiosity got the better of me – I made up for lost time, played through all four Dead or Alive games available at the time on emulators and a borrowed Xbox 360. True, I limited myself to the story modes – and then calmly sat down to wait for Dead or Alive 5, which eventually came out in several versions.

When I first got acquainted with this fighting game series, it was a real discovery for me. Since then, Dead or Alive has firmly established itself as one of my favorite games among 3D representatives of the genre. I admit, at first I was attracted by the visual component – spectacular characters, spectacular fights and the famous “physics”. But it was worth delving into the mechanics, as I realized that behind the external gloss there is a really smart and unusually dynamic combat system. Unlike competitors overloaded with kilometer-long lists of combinations, Dead or Alive relies on reaction, intuition and tactical thinking. Here, it is more important not to memorize long chains of blows, but to read the enemy’s movements, intercept attacks in time and break out of holds. Thanks to this, each fight turns into a tense duel, where the winner is not the one who has memorized more button combinations, but the one who understands the mechanics better and can adapt to the opponent’s style. This makes the game accessible to newcomers, but deep enough for experienced players to hone their skills for years.
It’s been many years, but Dead or Alive 6, released last week, remains true to this formula. The developers have kept the familiar gameplay, adding several interesting mechanics that make the fights even more intense. Now fighters have more options both in attack and defense, and a new system of special moves makes fights even more spectacular.

There is slightly less fan service in the sixth part, which caused mixed emotions among fans. However, I hope that this is just an experiment that will be adjusted in future updates – after all, Dead or Alive has always been able to present fan service appropriately and stylishly, making it an organic part of the gameplay. In 2019, fighting games without bright characters and memorable images are a rarity, but this series has always stood out not only for its visuals, but also for its balanced combination of dynamics, beauty and a well-developed combat system. And thanks to great graphics, juicy blows and spectacular arenas, Dead or Alive 6 remains one of the most spectacular and exciting games in the genre.
Graphics that you can’t take your eyes off of, and battles that you feel on your skin
The first thing that catches your eye in Dead or Alive 6 is, of course, the visual component. The developers have clearly done a great job: the characters look even more detailed and alive, although the famous “physics” of individual parts of the heroines’ bodies have undergone minor changes. However, the studio promises to return it in one of the future updates. Compared to Last Round, the picture has changed in all aspects: the fighters’ movements have become smoother, the arenas are more elaborate, and the spectacle is higher. Players will find not just beautiful scenery, but interactive environments with unexpected surprises. Be prepared for curious onlookers to interfere with the fight, and in some locations, pterodactyls, tyrannosaurs, tanks and other “hospitable” elements await you, ready to bring chaos to the battle.
The arenas themselves remain multi-level: the fight begins on the upper platform, but as events develop, the battle can move down. And the fall is accompanied by spectacular destruction – be it collapsing scaffolding, broken glass walls, or even a collision with an angry prehistoric bird. In some arenas, the environment can be used strategically: opponents can be thrown over railings, smashed against boxes or sandbags, and in some cases, the audience can be forced to intervene in the fight.
The user interface has become more convenient, and the combat arsenal has been replenished with new spectacular techniques. For the first time in the series, “Special Techniques” have appeared:
- Fatal Charge – a series of quick strikes that, although they do not deal huge damage, help to accumulate energy faster.
- Breakthrough strikes – powerful attacks that spend accumulated energy and are accompanied by spectacular animations.
- Breakthrough grabs – spectacular grabs that allow you to turn the tide of battle and punish your opponent for inattention.
These innovations not only add spectacle, but also expand tactical possibilities, allowing players to experiment with their fighting style.
As for the classic mechanics, they remained true to the traditions of the series. The controls are identical to Last Round, familiar techniques are performed in the same combinations, and the timing of strikes and counterattacks has not changed. Veterans of the game will instantly feel at home, but it has become even easier for beginners to get used to it – the developers have added additional training modes, which explain in detail when and how to use certain strikes. Each character has a personal training session, which allows you to study your favorite fighter in detail and hone your skills. Overall, Dead or Alive 6 has retained the spirit of the series, but has become even more spectacular and accessible for both old fans and beginners. And if earlier this fighting game attracted attention only with the beauty of the heroines, now it is able to retain players thanks to its well-developed mechanics and dynamic gameplay.
Story, fighters and new twists in Dead or Alive 6
The story of Dead or Alive 6 unfolds shortly after the events of the previous part, but, as before, the main tournament here remains more of a background. The main action again takes place outside the ring: the heroes find themselves drawn into a confrontation between two powerful corporations – DOATEC, headed by Elena Douglas, and MIST, which is controlled by the cunning Victor Donovan. And the championship itself? It goes on as usual, determining the strongest fighter and rewarding him with an impressive cash prize – DOATEC traditionally does not skimp on this. If you want to refresh your memory of what happened in the series up to this point, take a look at our materials – there we analyzed the background in detail.
In the fifth part, the story had a relatively coherent structure, but in Dead or Alive 6, the developers decided to go a different way. The entire storyline here is designed as a kind of board with episodes. Some of them are initially hidden and open only after completing others. The main events are lined up in one line, and next to them are the personal chapters of the characters, allowing you to get to know their stories in more depth. It seems that the story campaign is far from final. There is a lot of free space left on the “board”, and, apparently, new episodes will be added with the release of DLC. This is confirmed by the very first update (1.01), which brought additional chapters related to the characters Nyotengu and Phase 4. It is possible that we will have more twists.
As in previous parts, the roster of fighters has been expanded with new characters, and both debutants – NiCO and Diego – add new fighting styles and individual flavor to the game.
- NiCO is a technomancer obsessed with science. Her fighting style is based on speed and precision, and her unique feature is gloves that allow her to release electric discharges.
- Diego is a street fighter with a difficult past. His style is tough and straightforward, based on brute force and instincts developed over the years in street fights.
- Nyotengu (DLC) – a warlike tengu who uses levitation and air attacks in battle.
- Phase 4 (DLC) – a mysterious clone of Kasumi, who has fast and deadly techniques.
Each of them fits into the eternal behind-the-scenes rivalry between DOATEC and MIST in their own way, and it seems like their involvement in the story is just beginning. Well, let’s see where it leads.
