But the developers from MachineGames decided to argue with this rule and came up with an alternative reality in which the Nazis won World War II. In Wolfenstein: The New Order, the world of 1960 is subject to the iron will of the Third Reich, totalitarianism is in full bloom, and the resistance is almost destroyed.

The big war is over – there is simply no one to fight the regime. Disparate groups of rebels are hiding underground, waging a sabotage war, but they have almost no hope of victory. And then BJ Blazkowicz enters the scene – an American special agent who is not used to giving up. His fate leads him to the very thick of things – to the heart of occupied Berlin, where the surviving resistance fighters are preparing for the final push.

Blazkowicz is an old-school hero, one of those who can be given the order to “go and win”, and he will do it without blinking an eye. Fate tests his strength: torture, severe injuries, even a craniocerebral injury, due to which he is paralyzed. But this guy is not one to be broken – he continues to fight, no matter what. What is pleasantly surprising is that MachineGames does not make Blazkowicz a soulless killing machine. He is alive, real, with his fears, doubts and desires. In the foreground, of course, revenge and the fight for freedom, but somewhere nearby is love. Unlike the usual militaristic plots in the spirit of Call of Duty, there is room for feelings. His relationship with a girl named Anna becomes an important part of the story, and the scenes of their rapprochement look appropriate and natural. Yes, sometimes the developers even allow themselves frankness, but everything in moderation. These episodes dilute the harsh reality of endless shootouts, adding humanity and depth to the hero.

Power built on fear

Evil has won. Symbols of the triumph of iron will and cold-blooded order surround you at every step: Nazi symbols clearly appear on the gloomy facades of monumental buildings. Thanks to the filigree work of the artists, this world looks frighteningly realistic – an oppressive atmosphere permeates every corner. But the visual design is just the tip of the iceberg. The game’s universe is worked out to the smallest detail. Documents and notes found everywhere tell how Germany subjugated the entire world, and they do so not without a bit of sarcasm. For example, among the archival records, you can find a mention of Hans Armstark – the first German to set foot on the moon. Alternative history from MachineGames is not just an entourage for the total extermination of the fascists. This is a carefully constructed chronicle, where it is easy to get lost, noticing unexpected allusions and parallels.

Of course, the plot does not reach the level of BioShock in terms of sophistication, but in terms of the depth of development of the world, the creation of MachineGames is in no way inferior to cult projects.

The enemies here are varied: from ordinary soldiers to cybernetic monsters, mechanized dogs and combat robots. This directly affects tactics – each enemy requires a special approach.

The combat system follows the traditions of modern shooters: waves of enemies will rush at you from all sides, but Blazhkovich is always ready to return fire. The developers also added a “pumping” system, but it complements rather than changes the gameplay. Perks are awarded for performing certain actions, such as eliminating ten enemies in a slide, but their impact on the character is minimal.

You can go through many scenes in stealth, using a knife and a pistol with a silencer. The opponents are clearly not famous for their keen eyesight and hearing: the Germans seem unaware of peripheral vision, and react to the sounds of footsteps with Olympian calm. In close combat, they are also in no hurry to show initiative – if the enemy is unarmed, he is more likely to think about the meaning of life than rush into hand-to-hand combat. However, in shootouts, opponents act wisely: they take cover, shoot accurately, and at high difficulty levels they can seriously fray your nerves.

But Blazkovich has something to answer with. You can take a gun in both hands and cause a real massacre – however, it is better to forget about accuracy in this case. Wolfenstein: The New Order remains true to the spirit of the “old school” – there are no restrictions on the number of guns, first aid kits and armor are scattered everywhere, and corridors give way to spacious arenas with epic bosses.

Despite the retro elements, the game looks modern. The action is presented spectacularly, but without going overboard: there are fewer cutscenes here than in Call of Duty, but they are enough to make the narrative rich. MachineGames managed to create a rare balance. Wolfenstein: The New Order is a fusion of a cinematic action movie and an old-school shooter that takes the best from both genres. There is nothing superfluous here – only pure pleasure from exciting gameplay and a charismatic story.
