Black Mesa

Black Mesa

Black Mesa, being an amateur remake of the first Half-Life, is an almost complete copy of the 1998 original, transplanted to the latest version of the Source engine. Despite the lack of experience and a very long development period of as much as 15 years, devoted fans from Crowbar Collective managed to very meticulously and scrupulously rebuild the game from scratch, while expanding and supplementing it where appropriate. There are more changes than it seems at first glance, but they mainly concern graphics and music. Even now, in 2020, Black Mesa looks very decent. Of course, the level design remained almost unchanged, and from this point of view, this is a game from the past, but due to the change of engine, the levels sparkled with new colors. Black Mesa looks quite realistic. Let’s consider in our article on the review of the game.

The main character is a physicist named Gordon Freeman, who, during a scientific experiment, caused an accident at a secret facility. As a result of the accident, a portal to another world opened, and all sorts of alien creatures came running from there. Now our hapless scientist needs to get to the surface, which will require going through the entire complex, fighting off guests from another world and simultaneously eliminating the consequences of the invasion. That is, you will have to repair and launch various equipment located in the complex. And as if this were not enough, the government, having learned about the incident at the facility, sent special forces to eliminate all witnesses and cover up the tracks.

In addition to a rather primitive plot in the spirit of Doom and Quake, the narrative is also lame on both legs. This is, of course, not Dark Souls, but what is happening in the game world and how to proceed is almost never explained. Throughout the game, we are directed exactly four times:

  1. First – “get to the surface”;
  2. then – “launch a rocket”;
  3. after that – “find the Lambda sector, where secret developments are being carried out”;
  4. and then – “jump into the portal”.

And in all cases, the player is simply told where to go, without revealing any additional details. In some levels, it is not entirely clear where to go. It is unclear why the tedious, drawn-out rides on elevators or crawling on all fours through ventilation shafts were left unchanged. They could well have been sped up or diluted, for example, with enemy ambushes.

Features of the game Black Mesa

  • The Edge World looks absolutely stunning. Personally, I associated it with Pandora from the movie “Avatar” – a riot of colors is mesmerizing, but the environment can hardly be called “eye-catching”. It seems that you really got into another ecosystem with its own flora and fauna.
  • The platforming sections have been reworked. Long jumps have become much easier – now you only need to press the spacebar twice. This feature can now be used in combat.
  • The fight with the main headcrab, whose name is Gonarch, has changed dramatically. Now it is a cool, intense battle, turning into a chase, where you constantly switch roles in pursuit.
  • The module for long jumps now also compensates for fall damage, allowing you to quickly move from top to bottom in many situations.
  • All levels of the alien world have been redesigned and became much more extended. Xen now looks like a full-fledged dimension, and not a stub. There is a place for alien houses and a factory for producing soldiers and weapons. Some of the equipment and infrastructure clearly belongs to the Black Mesa complex and is quite organically integrated into the level design.
  • New puzzles have appeared, in which the player is required to go through a mined obstacle course without blowing anything up along the way.
  • New enemies will not let you get bored either, in particular, dogs that explode instead of emitting sound waves, and zombies dressed in protective suits – just like the main character.
  • The battle with the final boss is not a healer. This fight is now much more difficult and varied compared to the original. The antagonist uses a whole arsenal of different attacks and tricks: he is able to throw huge stone blocks at the player with the power of thought, uses various energy attacks and can limit the hero’s movement, locking him with stone barriers.
  • The battle arena has significantly increased in size, which allows you to actively dodge. The battle is now continuous – we are no longer teleported to other rooms to collect first aid kits and ammo. On the contrary, all the resources the player needs appear in the same location right during the battle, encouraging active play rather than sitting in one place.

Weapons and characters in Black Mesa: models, balance and possibilities

The weapon and character models deserve special attention. The rare surviving scientists and guards that we encounter on our way now look different, unlike in the original Half-Life. Smash through obstacles with a crowbar, detonate grenades, or unleash firepower with a fist gun, all equipped with infinitely replenishing ammunition. In the remake, certain firearms have been modified, which allows the game to return to its fundamental essence in a refreshing way. Nowadays, on Steam, players can immerse themselves not in the original version of Half-Life, but in a reimagined edition that features the High Definition Pack. This pack includes enhanced HD textures, and notable changes such as the Glock 17 being replaced by the sleek Beretta 92, while the classic MP5 has been swapped for the iconic Colt M16 A2. In the remake, every weapon is meticulously derived from the original Half-Life, albeit with slight adjustments, particularly concerning magazine capacities. For instance, the original MP5 came with a robust 50-round magazine, but in the remake, this has been reduced to 30 rounds. Additionally, the under-barrel grenades have seen a similar reduction, dropping from a maximum of 10 to just 5.

Black Mesa Weapons Best

The game has an Infinite Sprint, which is very useful in those levels where you have to do backtracking, or when you need to quickly change position during combat. The weapon balance has also changed. Many guns have had their maximum ammunition significantly reduced. Thus, the developers wanted to encourage players to use different guns, because now you can’t carry a whole backpack of ammo with you. The submachine gun does more damage. In the remake, the crossbow no longer shoots bolts with explosive tips and has become a full-fledged sniper weapon. Its rate of fire was greatly reduced, but its damage increased significantly. The shotgun took longer to reload, the spread became wider, and therefore the effective range decreased.

Grenades can now not only be thrown, but also rolled – just like in the second Half-Life, which simplifies the use of “lemons” in tight spaces. The aiming mode with a revolver and a crossbow was also redesigned. In the original game, it was a simple zoom in on the picture. Here, Gordon Freeman aims the magnum just like in modern shooters, namely, he brings it to the center of the screen, allowing him to aim at enemies with the front sight and rear sight, which is very convenient.

The optics installed on the crossbow are extremely inconvenient to use. Firstly, the visible area is quite small, and secondly, the magnification is too high to effectively use the sight at short, and sometimes even medium distances.

Black Mesa Improves Half-Life Gameplay

The game’s visual style hasn’t changed much. According to the developers, they wanted to show what Half-Life would look like in modern realities using all the technologies available to Valve, and they’ve mostly succeeded. Black Mesa is much more similar to the 1998 original than to Half-Life 2.

There were some changes in the gameplay. First, it became possible to carry items. Thanks to this mechanic, the overly drawn-out introduction in the form of the first three levels became less boring. Let me remind you that in the original, after an accident, we had to drag a guard armed with a pistol around with us and wait for him to shoot all the zombies – until they gave us at least a crowbar. The developers realized that this was boring, and added flares to this level, which you can use to fry zombies until they are crispy, and then eat their corpses to restore health. Just kidding, you can’t eat zombies.

Black Mesa Gameplay

Otherwise, there are several puzzles tied to the mechanics of carrying objects. In such situations, the player is usually required to find a valve from a faucet or connect wires to the right connectors. But there is almost nothing radically new here, similar to the puzzles from Valve’s later games, when the player is required to use the game’s physics to the fullest. I can only remember one situation in the entire game.

Black Mesa Soundtrack

The soundtrack of the first Half-Life was mostly electronic music, and literally in a couple of tracks you could hear guitar riffs. Otherwise, this soundtrack, although authentic, is made in one style. I do not want to say that the music that Valve wrote for their games is bad, but it is somewhat one-sided. The soundtrack of Black Mesa sounds much more diverse.

It combines both classical instruments like violin and piano, and modern powerful drums, electric guitar, and synthesizer. In many tracks, the listed instruments are adjacent and complement each other, creating a truly harmonious and memorable sound. As before, the music emphasizes the most important events that occur in the game, be it the transition to a new level or a particularly fierce battle. As for the developers, they also completely re-voiced all of the few non-hostile characters that the player encounters throughout the game and gives instructions. What hasn’t changed in Black Mesa is the narrative. For those of you who don’t know or have forgotten, the Freeman/military conflict takes up literally half the game, and it’s the most engaging part of Black Mesa. Some of the battles are especially memorable thanks to the new soundtrack. Composer Joe Mace was able to write music that feels fresh but doesn’t stand out from the overall context of the game.

Black Mesa Interface

As a conclusion about the game, we can only leave the best emotions from playing a quality independent shooter. It’s cool to shoot, interact with smarter opponents, look for secrets, stare at all sorts of laboratories, dark dungeons, open streets.

To enjoy Black Mesa, you’ll need at least 6 GB of RAM along with 20 GB of free space on your hard drive. Regarding the processor, the E1-1500 serves as the minimum requirement; however, if you’re looking to enhance your graphics settings and achieve a smoother, more enjoyable gaming experience, it’s advisable to go for a Sempron 3850 or any newer model that offers better performance.
