Sunkenland
Survival simulators appear by the dozens every year, and most of them start their journey in early access. Sunkenland is no exception. The game was released on Steam in late August 2023 and immediately made it clear that it wanted to take the best of the already known hits of the genre. It has post-apocalyptic exploration, base building, resource extraction and battles – everything that fans of the genre love. But how well is it implemented? What moments did the developers succeed in, and where does the game stall? Let’s figure it out.

Sunkenland is still in early access, so get ready to encounter bugs – there are plenty of them, and they appear with enviable regularity. Errors do not make the game completely unplayable, but it is also difficult to call them insignificant. Sometimes they cause confusion, sometimes they just interfere with comfortable passage, but, fortunately, nothing critical. However, there is a pleasant surprise – optimization. Honestly, I have already gotten used to the fact that in the genre of “survival games” even powerful hardware does not guarantee stable FPS, but Sunkenland pleasantly surprises. The game works surprisingly smoothly, without noticeable drops even in tense moments. Of course, it could not do without occasional slowdowns, but overall the project looks cheerful. Now the main thing is that the developers do not stop there: fix bugs, polish the balance and add more content to the full release. Sunkenland takes players to a dark future where most of the land is underwater and humanity is forced to fight for survival in this new world. Players will have to set up their base on the surviving islands, extract resources, explore the ruins of flooded cities, search for technologies of the past, fight enemies and trade with a few allies. The whole world is full of dangers – both from nature and from other survivors who are ready to do anything for food, water and ammunition.
The game begins with the main character (or a group, if playing in co-op) finding themselves on one of the small islands. The first hours are a classic struggle for existence: searching for fresh water, food, tools and building materials. Gradually, you have to master new mechanics, strengthen your base, expand your possessions and explore the depths that hide the secrets of the past. There are also enough challenges on land: mutants, bandits, lack of resources and a constant threat from nature. Each trip for loot can be the last, but this only fuels interest.

Ultimately, Sunkenland promises to be a solid survival game with an atmosphere that grabs you from the first minutes. The only question is whether the developers will be able to bring the game to mind by the final release. So far, the project definitely has potential.
The main mechanics of the game Sunkenland
As in any classic survival, the first thing you need to do is build at least some kind of shelter. The simplest option is a wooden house, which will save you from the first danger. Then you will have to do some crafting: create primitive tools, weapons and, of course, stock up on food and water. Without this, you will not last long. Then you can go explore the nearest islands in search of supplies and useful materials. If you want, you can even dive underwater – what if there is something interesting at the bottom? However, you should not relax: most of the NPCs you meet (except for merchants) will not be delighted with your appearance and will try to finish you off at the first opportunity.
The gameplay of Sunkenland is generally familiar to fans of cooperative survival games. The main mechanics are simple:
- Explore the islands, collect resources.
- Fight hostile NPCs and mutants.
- Collect loot and develop your base.
- Craft new equipment and tools.
- Defend the shelter from attacks.
At the same time, the base will be attacked by mutants from time to time, so you won’t be able to simply explore the world — no one has canceled the defense.
What are the first impressions and problems of Sunkenland?
At first, Sunkenland is really fun to play, especially with friends. The world beckons with the unknown, and the question marks on the map make you wonder: what is hidden there? This is what kept me interested in the first few hours. You want to explore, fight, and develop. However, the longer you play, the more you notice the monotony.
- A small amount of resources and items for crafting.
- Identical content of the islands: scrap metal, barrels, chests.
- Lack of unexpected finds and unique places.
The first few forays are pleasing, but then the element of surprise disappears.
The situation is aggravated by technical flaws that still raise questions. The enemy AI behaves strangely: sometimes they don’t notice you at point-blank range, sometimes they shoot through walls. The voice acting and sounds also leave much to be desired — for example, when mining ore, you hear sounds that are more reminiscent of the whistle of bullets, and some noises are simply grating on the ear. Water behaves unpredictably, sometimes penetrating the textures of the boat, which creates the feeling that your ship is sinking. But perhaps the most inconvenient thing is the inability to move installed objects. If you place something poorly, the only option is to break it and build it again. Perhaps such trifles are forgivable for a game in early access, but it would be unfair not to mention them.
From a graphical point of view, Sunkenland is not impressive – this is quite expected for an indie game. The water is done well, but otherwise the visuals are quite mediocre: the textures are sometimes soapy, the animations are either too angular or completely absent. The musical accompaniment is monotonous: the same background melody sounds throughout the game, changing only during combat moments. But, despite all the minuses, Sunkenland cannot be called a complete failure. In the first 10-15 hours, it can give a lot of fun, especially if you play with friends. Discovering new territories, fighting enemies together, arranging a base – all this is exciting. However, closer to the middle, you realize that there are too few mechanics, not enough content, and exploring the same type of islands is no longer so interesting.
Who might like it:
- Those who love survival games and are looking for something new.
- Those who play with friends and appreciate cooperative gameplay.
- Lovers of island exploration and sea themes.
Who should wait for the release:
- Those who are waiting for deep development of crafting and survival.
- Those who are annoyed by bugs and crude artificial intelligence.
- Those who like variety – the islands here are too similar to each other.
