Alan Wake Review – Free Download on Steam

Alan Wake

Alan Wake is a psychological action 3D – that’s how the developers themselves defined the genre. The game’s undeniable advantages are a solid, original, mystical story and a stunning dark atmosphere. But the gameplay is not far behind, although by modern standards it is already outdated. However, ten years ago it was very, very cool.

Alan Wake Review

The game takes place in the small American town of Bright Falls, where the famous writer Alan Wake arrives during a period of creative crisis. He comes with his wife Alice to rest in a quiet small town. They rent a house on a small island on Lake Cauldron. At some point, the lights go out in the house, and Wake hears his wife screaming and discovers that she has fallen into the lake. He jumps after her in the hope of saving her, but a moment later wakes up in a broken car, not remembering how he got there. There is no connection, what to do is unclear. He has no choice but to go and look for at least some help. Making his way through the dark forest, he meets some strange people who have been swallowed by the darkness and who appear literally out of nowhere. You can’t kill them with ordinary weapons – first you need to drive out the darkness with a flashlight. And then there’s more. Having reached a gas station and having called the local sheriff, he tries to explain what happened to him and his wife, but the sheriff looks at him like he’s a psychopath and says that the island with the house on the lake hasn’t been there since the 70s.

Alan Wake and the monsters

Everyone around Wake, including the local psychiatrist Dr. Emil Hartman, as well as his best friend, thinks that he’s talking complete nonsense. Along the way, Wake finds pages of a manuscript all over the area, which, apparently, was written by his hand. And what’s even stranger is that the events described in this manuscript begin to come true, and he himself becomes its main character.

While the story itself strives to avoid predictable twists, the specifics of the plot seem rather trite. But this feels more like an homage to horror novels than an accidental oversight by the writer. Additionally, the reasons for the prevalence of predictable twists in the narrative are explained, which adds a layer of understanding. Perhaps the aforementioned predictability is intentional. It creates a double-edged sword: on the one hand, about three-quarters of the events can be foreseen, which detracts from the tension; on the other hand, it shows the masterpiece of a thriller, effectively tying the narrative to the gameplay. This type of approach interested players, as they recognized the tropes while remaining drawn into the sad drama.

Alan Wake Dr. Emil Hartman dialogue

In general, the storyline leaves a delightful impression that lingers. The dialogues are skillfully crafted, and the protagonist’s musings, along with the radio and manuscript pages, serve to lighten his profound solitude. Yet, despite all the glowing praises, everything ultimately leans toward the captivating ambiance of a literary thriller. It is precisely for this unique atmosphere that the narrative and gameplay are intricately woven together.

From a narrative standpoint, this is a great, twisty, mystical detective story with well-written characters, lots of little details, easter eggs and references. The development of events is certainly interesting to watch, and as you progress through the plot, you really want to uncover all the secrets and eventually figure out what the hell is going on here.

Light vs Dark: Alan Wake Gameplay

As for the gameplay, it is in no way inferior to the plot, although not without nuances. The entire game is divided into six episodes and is presented as a short series. All locations are absolutely linear, but there is still a little space for exploration. Most of the time we will have to run through the dark forests and districts of the town of Bright Falls to get to the point we need, since the main actions take place at night, when darkness reigns in Alan Wake.

In addition to conventional weapons, an integral tool will be a flashlight, with which we will not only light our way, but also use it against enemies. All enemies are under the power of an unknown dark entity, and they cannot be killed with conventional weapons. You must first expel the darkness from them with the help of that very flashlight, simply by directing an enhanced beam of light at them, and only then finish them off with a firearm.

Alan Wake Bright Falls

There are quite a lot of enemies, they appear almost out of thin air, but they are not particularly diverse: these are ordinary people – some are larger, some are smaller, that’s all. In addition to the flashlight, we have access to flashbang grenades and flares, which are much more effective against the crowd, but their number is very limited in Alan Wake. In addition to people, sometimes there are aggressively minded birds that are destroyed with the same flashlight.

As the dark entity increases its power, it will be able to take control of even objects and try to stop us with them. And we are not only talking about small things like barrels and boxes, but also about a whole tractor or a bus! You will have to defend yourself from them in the same way – with a flashlight. Throughout the game, several times you will be allowed to ride in a car, which can not only quickly take us from point A to point B. The car can serve not only as a means of transportation, but also as a weapon against enemies. It has headlights, which means it can disperse darkness much more effectively than a flashlight. This adds a little variety, but there are very few such moments in the game.

In general, light plays a key role in this game. It not only drives darkness out of enemies, but also restores health to the main character. Large stationary lanterns can often be found throughout the area, which serve not only as checkpoints, but also as islands of safety: while you are in the light, no one will touch you. Many mechanics of the game are related to light and darkness, and they partially migrated to the AWE add-on for Control, which united these two games into one universe.

If we talk about minuses, then one, and it is relevant only by modern standards in Alan Wake. The fact is that the game completely lacks any kind of progression system. That is, neither the main character, nor his equipment, nor any skills evolve in any way as you progress. Just as you ran around with a revolver and a shotgun at the very beginning, you will continue to run around with them until the very end. Thus, the game mechanics do not change at all, which in turn makes the gameplay very monotonous and even tiring. This is especially acutely felt in the final third part of the game – because of this, part of the motivation for further progress and exploration is lost. The only thing that fueled my interest was the plot. I really wanted to know how all this hell would end in Alan Wake. In 2010, the industry was different, and such questions did not arise then.

Sound, performers and voice acting of characters in Alan Wake

The game features compositions by the Poets of the Fall group, which has collaborated with Remedy before. Their song Late Goodbye first appeared in the second Max Payne. Their work could also be heard in Control, at that very level of the Ashtray Labyrinth, although there they performed under the pseudonym Old Gods of Asgard, which is a reference to Alan Wake. Here, the guys from this group can be found throughout the game, and one epic battle takes place to their music.

Unlike other elements, sound is not directly tied to the core mechanics of the game. Instead, its role during gameplay is primarily supportive; players find themselves navigating subtle rustling sounds and evolving background music, which creates a successful environment to play through. Also worth highlighting are the songs that play at the end of each episode. They are quite delightful and add a memorable touch to the experience. However, only the track “War” really leaves a lasting impression on players. Interestingly, this particular track was not originally created for the game, but was included later, enhancing its emotional engagement.

Alan Wake looks like a tornado is coming

The final aspect worth discussing is the voice acting of the characters, and this is a situation where the developers certainly deserve some criticism. Don’t misunderstand me—on the whole, the voice work is quite commendable, but there are moments when it’s evident that the actors are overdoing their performances. This, combined with the somewhat clunky animation, creates a slightly off-putting experience. Throughout the entire game, there are no more than five such instances, and while I could easily overlook them, for a game that relies heavily on creating an immersive atmosphere, any disruption in the sense of presence due to inconsistencies in voice acting can be significantly detrimental.

To successfully play Alan Wake, you will need at least 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of free space on your hard drive. As for the processor, the minimum recommendation is Pentium D 915. But if you want to improve the settings and can play with comfort in the gameplay, it is recommended to choose A6-5400K or a more successful processor.

What can you say in general about the game Alan Wake?

Overall, Alan Wake, even more than ten years after its release (in 2025), still plays quite well and leaves an exceptionally positive impression, despite the outdated mechanics. The game manages to maintain interest, so if you haven’t played it yet, now is the time to get acquainted with this world. Especially since in the future we will not only have a sequel, but also, perhaps, further development of this entire universe, which now includes Control.
