ARK: Survival Evolved Review – Free Download on Steam
Since the release of the original ARK: Survival Evolved in early access in 2015, 8 years have passed, during which the community received 12 full-fledged DLCs and countless mods from the community. The game itself gained cult status among survival games, as it had unique ideas that revived the genre, and well-functioning mechanics. But this was not enough for the developers, and they decided to make a full-fledged remake on the new Unreal Engine 5 with all its functions. Well, we will tell you how they did it in our review.
The game begins to surprise you literally from the very start – from the purchase, since at the time of release its price was only at the level of one and a half thousand rubles, which is not so much. But less than a day passed, as the developers changed the price to expensive. But on our website VPEsports you can install the game for free and play.

ARK Survival Evolved Review
For those who are not familiar with the original, we will briefly run through the main points and touch on the concept of this game in general. Since several elements allowed it to stand out from other survival games.
The first is, of course, the setting. After all, although there are many survivals, but with dinosaurs – ARK was the first and remains the only one in its niche. But this does not mean that everything else here is from the same Mesozoic era. On the contrary, with time and pumping, you can open mechanisms, create power plants, lay wiring, for example, to turrets for protection or a refrigerator so that food does not spoil so quickly. Such a well-developed survival! And there is even the ability to travel to other worlds, due to which the game has earned the status of a cult in ARK: Survival Evolved.
But one thing remains unchanged – these are bugs. Over the long 9 years of development, some, of course, were fixed, some were ignored, and some were even added in new updates. And with the release of ARK: Survival Evolved, many players felt like they were in Groundhog Day, as if all those 8 years had never happened. After all, the original was not just put into early access with a bunch of its own problems at the release.
Dinosaur Types, Survival Upgrades, and Crafts in ARK: Survival Evolved
ARK is a game about typical survival, but not in a typical place, where you can’t really come up with anything mechanically new. Here you also have to monitor thirst, hunger, cold and even heat, which is usually helped by clothes or some kind of hut or something similar. But it’s not enough to just build it, since various dinosaurs scurry around every now and then, not averse to destroying a flimsy structure.
So over time you have to improve your walls, make more advanced protection and so on, up to some nanotechnology in the prehistoric world, which, although it looks non-canonical, adds interest. Although the main difference from other survival games, of course, are dinosaurs – there are more than 120 species in the game, and each of them is unique. Some can even be tamed and used on the farm, instead of a horse or even an airplane, and some are better just not to get underfoot, so as not to be trampled . This creates a truly incredible atmosphere of wild nature, in which you feel like nothing more than a small ant against the backdrop of colossal dinosaurs in ARK: Survival Evolved.
Some of them are not even averse to fighting with each other from time to time for territory and other little things of the wild nature, which, of course, affects the feeling of the liveliness of the surrounding world. In the remaster, this feeling only intensifies when you understand that the game does not revolve around you, but you are simply a part of this world. This forces you not only to survive, monitoring typical indicators, but also to study each of the existing dinosaurs, since even on low difficulty, aggressive dinos are bloodthirsty killers, evading them or defending yourself from them is extremely difficult.
The most unpleasant thing is that if, or rather, when a character dies, then we have only one chance to get to his belongings. The problem is that in PvP multiplayer, this is a completely different level of difficulty. At the same time, despite the updated user interface, the mechanics of construction and crafting have not changed much, which is striking against the background of other survival games that came out after ARK: Survival Evolved. Therefore, in order to smooth out the edges at least in the selection of elements for construction, the developers simplified this process. Now they are selected by pressing the R button, scrolling through the available options, changing the usual wall to a doorway, larger doors, corner doors, a window and a rotating false wall, for example, for some hidden passages.
Once you get to the island, you will be given the opportunity to customize your character first. In the realm of open-world survival games, this feature is often the exception rather than the standard practice. However, the developers have approached this aspect with their own creative look. Forget about those basic editors that simply allow you to change hair color and clothing options. Here, you will find a successful level of freedom in shaping your character. While it may not be as complex as what you will find in The Sims, it certainly brings its own style of play. As we know, the graphical quality of open-world games often suffers and often lags far behind industry giants such as Battlefield, Fallout, and Call of Duty. However, in ARK, the visuals are surprisingly attractive, with all the main elements presented in great detail. You will notice lush environments, animated creatures, and an overall look that immerses you in this colorful world. Early versions of the game may not provide optimal FPS.
Graphics, bugs, Unreal Engine 5 in ARK: Survival Evolved
However, crafting still has some extra actions and clicks. However, there are things that players liked, namely the ease of discovering new recipes and repairing broken tools. But the main change that immediately catches the eye is the graphics. Of course, after the incredibly low number of frames, the picture here is truly impressive:
- Textures have become more detailed,
- Light sources illuminate the environment,
- Which looks special at night,
- Mist rising from waterfalls or appearing during rain adds atmosphere.
All this simply makes you get stuck on the surrounding beauty, and even the cracks in the logs let in the light of the fire in the house, setting you up for some kind of domestic comfort, which was achieved by the new engine from Epic Games – Unreal Engine 5 in ARK: Survival Evolved. True, not all players will be able to see this, since even the minimum requirements are some kind of sky-high, despite the fact that the game still runs incredibly poorly on them, considering that the recommended hardware does not pull even the average settings of 60 frames. And I’m not even talking about the maximum. And this is not to mention the constant bugs, crashes and glitches, when an object gets stuck in textures and begins to load the processor even more. Many on the Internet attribute this to poor optimization, which, of course, may be true, but it is somehow too suspicious that all the new products with similar problems that have been released recently were developed on Unreal Engine 5. Perhaps the problem is in it, or perhaps the developers simply have not learned how to work with it yet. PvP is the norm and is actively used in games like Rust, when even after leaving the game, the character remains inside, and other players can kill and loot it. Actually, like loot inside the house. Such is the fate of survival. But in a single player, when any dino can destroy the house or kill the character, it is not so fun, since it does not allow us to choose the style of play. And it was so until the moment when the anger of the players did not exceed all conceivable norms, creating a petition to allow fan servers in ARK: Survival Evolved.
The game uses a multiplayer mode. In fact, teaming up will be absolutely necessary for good progress in development on this island, where dangerous creatures lurk around every corner. To make the cooperative gameplay even more exciting, each character has the ability to form a personal tribe and invite friends to join them on their adventure. A password allows players to easily access their tribe’s village, creating a hub for cooperation and strategy. The village serves as a meeting place where players can share resources, exchange stories, and plan their next move against the threats of the island.
If you played ARK Survival Evolved, then the remaster will not be a revelation for you, because, unlike the visuals and minor innovations, the game mechanics are not very different, and therefore you already know in advance what to expect from it. Be that as it may, the graphics are truly phenomenal, but you can appreciate them either on YouTube in the trailer.

What can we say in conclusion about ARK: Survival Evolved?
What can we say in the end? If you liked ARK: Survival Evolved, you’ll probably like the ARK: Survival Ascended remaster once the bugs are fixed and the performance is optimized. At least you can enjoy the original ARK: Survival Evolved while you wait. But if you’ve never tried to survive alongside dinosaurs and are considering the remaster as an entry ticket into the genre, it’s worth realizing that now is not the best time – both because of the game’s poor technical components. That’s all for now. ARK: Survival Evolved is a really beautiful game, but at the same time, apart from the graphics, it has nothing special to boast about at release.
