Fallout: New Vegas Review – Free Download on Steam

Fallout New Vegas

Bethesda studio methodically brought Fallout 3 to the state of a rotting corpse with its second-rate add-ons — faith in a bright future was becoming less and less. The new Fallout seemed to be nothing more than an official modification for the third part — with improved textures, new quests, blackjack and girls of easy virtue, but nothing more. Perhaps the skepticism was caused by the almost identical visual data, perhaps the slightly tarnished reputation of Obsidian Entertainment after the game Alpha Protocol was to blame. Who would have thought that Fallout: New Vegas would be a cut above its advertised predecessor from the creators of the legendary The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind? And that’s exactly what happened.

Fallout New Vegas review

The locations, characters and quests are all perfectly designed. The characters speak in the voices of Hollywood stars: the mysterious man in the expensive suit is voiced by Matthew Perry, and the old soldier Hanlon is voiced by Kris Kristofferson. There is even Danny Trejo in his usual and, it seems, absolutely comfortable role as a ghoul. The outskirts of New Vegas have hardly suffered from radiation, so from any angle, the local oases look much nicer than the dull Washington landscapes. But the brightest impression is left by the bright neon signs of casinos and restaurants – there was nothing like this in the world of Fallout until recently. And it’s great that there is now!

Fallout New Vegas Big Building and Hero

The series’ signature cynicism has not gone away and is present in colossal quantities. For example, a sect of ghouls has settled at the nearest nuclear plant, dreaming of leaving Earth on a ballistic nuclear missile. Thanks to the efforts of the main character, their journey to the “wonderful faraway land”, by the way, may well take place – to the sound of Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries. There are a lot of such witty quests in the game. The player is left rolling on the floor in a fit of wild laughter. And not far from Goodsprings, you can find Dr. Indiana Jones in a refrigerator – just like in the movie Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Or, say, the remains of a village idiot who imagined himself a superhero nicknamed Mister Radical.

Hard trials in New Vegas, what’s special about it

There are few plot forks at first, but the further the character progresses through the scenario, the more there are. The ending is influenced by many circumstances, which makes the passage of New Vegas unique for each player. Including karma, relationships with groups and the hero’s actions immediately before the finale, as before, the overwhelming majority of tasks can be completed in several ways – with the help of chatter, force, money or theft. Despite the fact that an unprepared person will hardly be able to distinguish Fallout 3 from New Vegas by appearance, in fact, there is a deep gulf between the games. Let’s start with the fact that it is interesting to live in New Vegas even without a dozen third-party modifications. Although the game comes with a powerful toolkit, the first time you play through it, you don’t want to change anything.

Fallout New Vegas Flamethrower and Enemies

And what modifications are there, if even without them, a simple and accessible RPG can be transformed into a complex and reliable simulator of life in a radioactive world with a couple of mouse clicks at any time? In addition to the standard difficulty levels, which are responsible for the durability of enemy foreheads, New Vegas has a built-in “Hardcore” mode. It is made specifically for old-school fans who do not like the conventions and assumptions inspired by modern role-playing games in Fallout. As soon as you turn on “Hardcore”, ammunition instantly gains weight, medicines begin to act slowly, and there is a constant need for water, food, and rest. At least you don’t have to go to the toilet.

There are, however, some oddities: for killing a fierce scorpion, one experience point is given, while for picking a lock, for some reason, as many as 30.

New Vegas has become even more role-playing not only thanks to the mode for the most meticulous and fastidious. After many angry letters to Bethesda, some interesting features from the first two parts have finally returned to Fallout. A normal reputation system has appeared – that’s one. The hero’s actions that will please some Caesar’s Legion will cause a lot of indignation among the New California Rangers and vice versa. Considering that there are more than a dozen different groups in the game, it is incredibly difficult to please everyone at once. So you have to do a trick with disguises so that the sullen guys from the Brotherhood do not accidentally twist off your head.

Fallout New Vegas weapons and dog

Weapons, Companions, and Food in Fallout: New Vegas

The weapon is improving again – that’s two. If earlier you could throw away a pistol without much regret, now the loss of a magnum with an optical sight, increased rate of fire and an extended magazine becomes a real tragedy. Items, cartridges and food in New Vegas can be created independently from scrap materials. These three creators scattered a huge number of interactive workbenches and fires around the world. In addition, the importance of perks has greatly increased – from now on you can choose a perk only once for two level-ups, and in hardcore mode – once for three levels. The game has the ability to take up to two characters as assistants at the same time – from the modest bespectacled Dr. Dobbs to a cyborg with brains floating in a solution. A similar thing was in Fallout 3, but it lacked a convenient interface for giving clear instructions. New Vegas has such an interface – a convenient circular command panel allows you to give commands, rummage through the inventory of companions, just communicate with them and much more.

Fallout New Vegas play

New Vegas has both new and well-forgotten old monsters. The most charismatic are invisible super mutants and updated geckos, as if they came from the pages of Japanese Pokemon comics. Where there is a casino, there is gambling – New Vegas, of course, is no exception. In any entertainment establishment, you can play roulette, Black Jack or try your luck at the machines. As practice shows, at first it is difficult to get rich this way, but it is much easier to lose time or gamble. It is better not to rush, gradually pump up the luck parameter, after which the chance of hitting the jackpot becomes an order of magnitude greater.

Externally, we have before us an exact copy of Fallout 3, only clearer, brighter and more diverse. The engine’s shortcomings are well known to anyone who once decided the fate of the city of Megaton and destroyed the Enclave base: poor animation, glitches, low draw distance and unreasonable resource demands. The Obsidian team was unable to overcome them. But New Vegas definitely sounds “worth all the money” – there is Dean Martin, familiar to many, and several other gorgeous compositions from the middle of the last century. True, the radio station’s repertoire could have been more diverse – on the second day of playthrough, you involuntarily catch yourself thinking that you already know the words of the notorious “Johnny Guitar” practically by heart. The same cannot be said about New Vegas – after the first playthrough, and after the second, and after the fifth, there is always something new in the game.
