We can’t avoid the fact that almost all games are commercialized now, and that’s okay — that’s what they’re made for. Now, all major projects, for the sake of greater security, are made according to the same pattern to please the buyer and justify the money spent. A catchy story and a main character that will be relevant to modern society, of course, an open world in which giant teams recreate entire cities with filigree precision. And the graphics, of course, are extremely pleasing to the eye.

The goal of such games is one — to collect as much money as possible. As players, we accept this, because in return we get a cool project, and that’s true. But sometimes you just have to stop playing the usual AAA titles and turn on something else, and suddenly you seem to find yourself in another dimension. You see the Game with a capital letter, because after playing it, you understand that all the games you’ve played before were somehow wrong. You kind of played them, but in reality, you were put into similar situations over and over again, held by the hand, told some story, and shown local landmarks. They were interesting, and you had a lot of fun, but still, when you beat the damn Undertale, it’s like night and day compared to what you played before. You realize that games, it turns out, had much more potential than you previously imagined. Like this game really has a soul, created not for money, but for self-expression and art.

Undertale review

Undertale is the creation of Toby Fox. And if you have long been stuck among the Ubisoft conveyor belts, online services and even their barriers, and have never gone beyond these boundaries, then this game will be a breath of fresh air in your gaming career. Let’s start with its “wrapper”. At first glance, the game looks just awful, and because of this, most people with a pure soul skipped it. No matter how much they tell me not to judge a book by its cover, people still miss unpleasant things. This saying works here one hundred percent, because after a couple of boss fights, especially after the ending, you understand that it would be damn hard to depict what was happening in any other way.

It’s not the graphics that are terrible – it’s such an unusual style. Terrible graphics are in some other craft from the Android Market, but you will never remember it. Whereas in Undertale, each character and mob has an original design. But are there enough graphics here? Hopefully, it’s already clear that in games like these, it’s not as important as the gameplay.

On the small screen, a cute character named Frisk, who can be either a girl or a boy, finds themselves in a wonderful world. They engage in bizarre battles with frogs and rather pathetic, crying mosquitoes. Along the way, they interact with a humanoid creature, possibly a goat or a cow, named Toriel, who can provide instructions and warmth. Frisk also solves playful puzzles, such as “find the green button hidden behind the pillar” or “move the stone onto the platform to unlock the next area.” There are moments when Frisk falls through holes in the floor, only to bravely return and feel their way back to the right path again – an experience they can repeat ten times.

Interestingly, mosquitoes and frogs can be spared, allowing for a more compassionate approach to the gameplay. You can even communicate with Toriel over the phone, creating a bond with this cute character. Upon entering, you are greeted by a talking flower that looks like it escaped from a horror movie, adding interest to your adventure. The look is further enhanced by lighthearted jokes such as “Why is the skeleton so sad? Because he feels lonely,” which perfectly contrasts with the unfolding narrative and keeps the story interesting. Each encounter adds insight and humor, enriching Frisk’s adventure in this bizarre world.

People and monsters lived close, but over time there was a quarrel and all the furry, clawed and other animals and strange creatures were banished underground. Frisk accidentally fell into this dungeon, and now she needs to somehow get back out.

Undertale: JRPG Inversion and Gameplay

The game wants to position itself as a JRPG, but in fact it is some kind of inversion of this genre. You seem to be given the opportunity to play as you want – you can even kill absolutely everyone here, but the game itself will hint at all costs from the very beginning that this is not quite right. Not that it was not intended that way – on the contrary, an ending with total genocide is possible. Undertale simply shows you how wrong it is sometimes – to use all the means at your disposal.

We have already become accustomed to cutting out mobs in the most terrible ways in other JRPGs, but this game opens up for you a path of total pacifism that has never existed in this genre before. Do not think that there are no battles here – they cannot be avoided. You will simply have the opportunity to defeat the boss in a different way, without causing harm to anyone. By the way, the fights with each boss are not similar to each other in the word “at all”. In one, for example, there will be bullet hell, and in another – a quiz. Yes, you heard right. And in the third game, the rules change again. In this game, you are given truly complete freedom of choice: you can leave everyone alive, or you can spare no one. And depending on this, you get two completely different stories.

If you fight everyone out of habit, you will soon discover that although you play as the protagonist, you are far from the hero of this story.

Undertale takes a hackneyed and not at all unique story about the existence of two worlds next to each other – the world of people and the world of monsters. The player literally falls on everyone’s heads as a person and begins his adventure there. But from the very beginning, the game begins to slowly break the fourth wall, hinting that behind this simple story about a hike from the very depths of the caves to the barrier between worlds, there is something more serious. And this has a great effect on the perception of the gameplay, because it is already clear that putting yourself in the place of the main character would be difficult.

Undertale: Music, Dialogue with the Player, and Revolution in the Industry

Toby Fox slowly starts a dialogue with the player himself, making him feel responsible for all the actions taken. By the way, this Toby Fox is also a very talented musician. More than a hundred melodies alone were written for the game, but even here this is not the most important thing. The musical accompaniment of the game is part of the story. Each character has his own leitmotif and several tracks associated with it. But what is more interesting is that the music itself develops along with the plot. The theme of the location itself can be an accelerated variation of the melody of the battle with its boss. Melodies can be mixed and even contain pieces of others.

You need to understand that this sounds as if the author did not have enough imagination to write new music. But this interweaving is easily explained by the plot and only adds color to this or that character. If at first it consists of only a few notes, then as the player progresses and makes decisions, it becomes richer and more interesting.

Throughout the game, you never stop feeling the author’s handwriting, because it really is a huge collection of ideas that are atypical for the entire industry. The standard one-way play model does not work here – Undertale plays with you. Even such a sophisticated gamer as me, who has been playing games from the last century since infancy, has never seen such a level of interaction with the player himself. The more you immerse yourself in this game, the more it rewards you.

This is a truly new experience that Toby Fox kindly provided to the entire gaming industry five years ago. And, as for me, it was a real slap in the face of all the huge development teams. He showed that you do not need thousands of human resources and hundreds of millions of dollars for development. And people do not need to buy an expensive gaming PC to fully touch the beautiful. A truly fresh idea that will evoke a response in the soul of the player, and not in the messages of the offended on Twitter, is enough.

• Pros: masterpiece plots, humor, characters and dialogues; chance to complete the game without killing anyone at all; different endings; cool music.
• Cons: the game ends sooner or later; not the best visual style in the world.

Undertale shows how much more games can give us — and it’s mind-blowing. At the moment, the world is oversaturated with good, but monotonous games. And in the last decade alone, so many cool projects have been released that my entire life would not be enough to play them all. And neither would you. So why stick to one genre? Try something truly unusual for yourself, something that can give you new emotions. And Undertale would be an ideal candidate.
