Quake Champions Review – Free Download on Steam

Quake Champions

Today we will talk about the legendary shooter Quake Champions. Not long ago at E3 2016, Bethesda announced a reboot of the Quake series. Few will remember, but at one time the games of this series were wildly popular, including among eSportsmen. However, unfortunately, id Software did not use the full potential of the series, and over time the game turned into a niche discipline for a small number of hardcore gamers.

After the teaser was shown at E3, people again had hope that this time Bethesda would not miss its chance, unlike id Software. To achieve this, the company puts in a huge amount of effort not only in technical implementation, but also in balance. The developers actively cooperate with professional players when creating the game, which, as you understand, has a positive effect on the balance and the feeling of the gameplay.

Quake Champions review

The main goal of the reboot, according to the creators, is to bring to people exactly that competitive spirit of multiplayer battles that was lost many years ago, while preserving the unique atmosphere of the original Quake. From the name it is already clear that the main role in Quake Champions will be played by champions.

The game will be presented in the Free-to-Play format. The game has several modes, such as Match, Team Deathmatch and, of course, a duel, which is the main eSports discipline. It seems that they even promise a classic mode without champions’ abilities. There will also be new modes, for example, Sacrifice – a 4 vs 4 team mode.

The developers of the new game have drawn heavily on the third part, and this influence is immediately apparent. The first arena we explored during the closed beta is a remake of the legendary Q3DM6 map, with its specific columns, bridge and a series of trampolines lining the edges, creating an active environment. What’s great about the story is how the team at id Software managed to perfectly shape the gameplay that many gamers fondly remember from the many hours spent in computer cafes in the early 2000s. Quake Champions is all about skill: precision, reaction speed and strong knowledge of the map are crucial. However, there is an internal timer in your mind counting down the seconds until these additional bonuses appear, which adds a new level of mild anxiety.

Quake Champions battle

In the bottom left corner, you’ll spot some armor, while to the right, there’s an hourglass that quickens the recovery of special abilities, giving you a strategic edge.

These icons—signifying weapons, health, armor, or temporary boosts that enhance damage—harken back to earlier gaming experiences. They pop up on the map, vanish when picked up, and then reappear later, creating a dynamic environment. Other items casually float around, waiting for their moment to be claimed, but the battle for weapons ignites right at the beginning of the round. The excitement builds as players scramble to secure powerful gear. Nobody wants to run into an enemy wielding a rocket launcher only to retaliate with a spray of metal nails from a nail gun. Timing and strategy are crucial; every choice can mean the difference between victory and defeat in the heat of battle.

The emotions remain just as intense. Anyone who has played Quake 3: Arena will recall that moment of breath-holding right before firing the railgun, only to exhale sharply when that deadly beam strikes true against an enemy. The same feeling applies when playing Quake Champions; it’s not limited to just the railgun. Each enemy rocket tends to make you instinctively lean back in your chair, while the shotgun compels you to rush in close, eager to unleash a barrage of pellets into your foe. The thrill is palpable, and every shot feels like a heartbeat, a dance between life and pixelated death.

However, as a body, certain reflexes and knowledge of certain types are familiar: bunny hops, swerve jumps, and of course, the rocket jump, which can launch your character high into the air without a ramp. And then there’s the constant movement – standing still in Quake Champions is simply impossible. If you do, you’ll get blown up, sliced up, or crushed. While players are never immune to death, dodging a rocket while running is much more difficult than standing still.

Map, gameplay and characters

In the Quake Champions beta, players are given a choice of three interesting arenas: the updated Q3DM6, now aptly named Blood Covenant, an ancient and mysterious temple known as the Ruins of Sarnath, and a grand castle called Burial Chamber. Each arena carries its own creative design from the developers, making for more exciting competitions. Quake Champions really smiles as a modern part of the franchise, and this is largely due to our talented compatriots from Saber Interactive, who deftly created a beautiful graphics engine for the game. Active visuals, parallel to the beautiful costumes in the game, combining various colors and gradually updating the game, the developers make a much more perfect product. Every intricate detail on each weapon serves as a reminder of the time when id Software was a pioneer, setting the bar for graphic improvements in the gaming industry.

Quake Champions Map, gameplay

Quake Champions features a variety of unique characters, each with their own unique characteristics and playstyle. To help you get into the game, let’s take a closer look at the new champions and their abilities.

Ranger

Quake Champions Ranger

This hero is familiar to fans of previous Quake games. Like all characters in the game, he has both an active and a passive ability:

Active ability – “Orb of Doom”

When activated, Ranger throws an orb to which he can teleport when pressed again. If not used, after a while it will simply explode, damaging nearby enemies. This is a great ability for mobility and surprise attacks.

Passive skill – self-damage reduction

Reduces the damage Ranger inflicts on himself by 20%. This makes him especially attractive to Rocket Jump fans, allowing him to move freely around the map without significant health loss.

Ranger is a versatile fighter – one of the simplest and most versatile heroes, suitable for any game mode. This is why he is a core champion available to every player from the very beginning.

Slash

Quake Champions Slash

The character is much more complex than Ranger, and requires good reaction and accuracy. Slash’s main problem is her weak survivability. She can get a lot of frags in Deathmatch, but it becomes more difficult to play her with experienced enemies.

Active Ability – “Plasma Trail”

Slash – The Queen of Skates leaves behind a plasma trail that deals damage to enemies who walk along it. When used again, the trail explodes, instantly dealing heavy damage to nearby enemies.

Passive Ability – “Slide”

Allows Slash to slide, crouching when landing, making her movement fast and smooth. This gives her great mobility, but requires skill.

Slash is a difficult champion, weak in duels, but very effective in dynamic modes.

Nyx

Quake Champions Nyx

Unlike Slash, Nyx is a stealthy assassin – a simpler character. She has a small health pool, but this is compensated by good armor and high speed. Her main advantage is one of the strongest active abilities in the game.

Active ability – “Ghost Step”

When activated, Nyx becomes invisible and invulnerable to any damage. This allows her to avoid attacks, pass through enemies and suddenly attack.

Passive skill – “Wall Jump”

Allows Nyx to bounce off walls and quickly change positions, which makes her very mobile. Nyx feels great in all modes, especially in fast firefights and duels.

Scalebearer

Quake Champions Scalebearer

This champion is easy to master and is suitable for players who prefer survivability and straightforward attacks. He is a classic tank, with high survivability and good speed.

Active ability – “Bull Rage”

Scalebearer is an armored tank that gains tremendous speed and knocks down enemies in its path, causing great damage on impact.

Passive skill – increase in mass

The faster Scalebearer accelerates, the harder it is to stop him, and when colliding with opponents, he deals damage. This character is ideal for beginners, as he is durable and deals stable damage.

Together with his abilities, he is an ideal character for DEC and Team DEC, but due to the large size of the model, the character has a large hitbox – roughly speaking, it is very easy to hit.

As for skills, the active ability is “Bull Rage”, when activated, he quickly rushes forward and deals huge damage to all enemies touched. Passive ability – “Heavyweight”: when reaching a speed of 400 units, he begins to deal damage to all opponents he can touch. The damage from the passive increases depending on the speed of the character.

Anarki

Quake Champions Anarki

Anarki is a medium difficulty character, a super-fast DD dealer. A small amount of health is compensated by increased armor and movement speed. Honestly, the character is not mega-imbalanced, he has a rather controversial active ability “Adrenaline”, which heals and speeds up the hero. And the passive allows you to turn in the air. In general, nothing outstanding, let’s move on.

Clutch

Quake Champions Clutch

Clutch is a complex character from the tank category: a lot of armor, a lot of health, but very low running speed, which is what makes him difficult to master. Suitable for eam Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch modes, in duels he is not so good, since he has a large hitbox and becomes an excellent target for fast railgunners.

Active skill – “Barrier”, turns on a shield that cannot be penetrated by projectiles, but its protection decreases with each hit on the character. Passive skill – “Still Defense”: movement without jumping and strafes speeds up the character.

Visor

Quake Champions Visor

The next hero is Visor. He has a good amount of health, rather weak armor and normal movement speed. Active skill – “View through walls”, and the passive allows you to jump without speed limits. If you like to play stable characters like Ranger, then this is your choice.

Galena

Quake Champions Galena

The last and very difficult character – his main problem is speed, otherwise average armor and a good amount of health.

Active ability – “Unholy Totem”.

Lena places a totem that deals damage to enemies and heals teammates within its radius of action.

The passive skill allows you to reduce the recovery time of “Unholy Totem” by 5% for each health bubble picked up. In general, a pure support. If you are going to go to Team Deathmatch, then take this hero for sure.

Customization

Let’s tell you a little about customization in Quake Champions. Where would we be without it! Despite the fact that the game is Free-to-Play, you can buy various skins for your characters in the shooter for money. Of course, this does not affect the gameplay in any way.

And now let’s move on to the most interesting thing – weapons.

The Best Weapons in Quake Champions and Their Uses

Our list starts with a heavy Heavy Machine Gun in Quake Champions. It has an increased rate of fire and damage. It has a large spread of bullets, and at the same time it does not require special accuracy. It is effective against champions with a Railgun.

Quake Champions Heavy Machine Gun

The next weapon is a super shotgun. It is great for finishing off an opponent at point-blank range, because it is often safer than using a rocket gun or Railgun.

Among all the weapons available in the arena, the super shotgun is a champion not only in damage inflicted, but also in the difficulty of mastering. As in the case of a regular nail gun, the main thing here is to learn to predict the enemy’s movement.

The main weapon of all battles in Quake Champions is, of course, the Rocket Launcher. Having learned to anticipate the enemy’s actions, you can significantly increase your advantage, and the blast wave will allow you to control the enemy’s position. And, of course, do not forget about rocket jumps, which allow you to take a more advantageous position and carry out a surprise attack in exchange for a certain part of health and armor.

Quake Champions Rocket Launcher

Fighters who have mastered lightning and are able to fire accurately at moving targets can take away the entire supply of armor and health from the enemy in two counts. Be careful with jump pads – having risen into the air, you will be practically defenseless, which can lead to the loss of a large amount of health or even death. To make it more difficult for the enemy to hit you, try not to linger in one place. Try to dodge or use the blast wave from your own weapon in Quake Champions.

Railgun rewards accuracy with high damage and punishes carelessness with a long reload. Do not use Railgun in close combat unless you are 100% sure of success, because if you miss, you will be completely vulnerable. Railgun reloads very slowly, so do not let enemies collect armor and amplifiers. Control the most important points in the arena and attack from afar, leaving no chance for the enemy to deal retaliatory damage.

Actually, this is the very important information that will help you dominate the arena. And then everything depends on you and your skills in Quake Champions.

To be honest, many players think that a large number of players might be scared off by the excessive hardcore nature of this game. After all, this is where pure skill begins to appear.

Quake Champions play

Is something missing from the mix? Absolutely, the plasma rifle, grenade launcher, and BFG appear to have disappeared from the lineup. It seems we won’t be encountering them anytime soon. However, the developers confidently assert that they have a few surprises still hidden up their sleeves. It’s challenging to discern exactly what they might be hinting at. Yet, it’s becoming increasingly clear why they chose to exclude these three iconic weapons from the game. Balancing all the various elements in the new title will be a substantial task for them as it stands, and they seem keen to focus on fresh gameplay experiences instead.

Quake Champions System Requirements

For the most immersive, smooth gameplay experience in Quake Champions, you should have at least 8GB of RAM and at least 32GB of free hard drive space. Although the minimum graphics card you can use is the GeForce GT 730, for an optimal and more interesting gaming experience, the developers strongly recommend upgrading to the Radeon RX 5700. It will greatly improve the visual quality and performance of the game. As for the processor, the minimum required is the Core i5-750. To play smoothly, you need to buy a more powerful Core i7-7700K or even a more powerful model.
