But even these options aren’t a guarantee of safety: you’ll often have to protect the vans from dangers along the way. More than once, my team and I had to fight monsters, causing the van to crash and forcing us to make our way back to our destination on foot. This creates a unique sense of uncertainty, although it can be extremely frustrating when you find yourself stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Still, despite the difficulties, the mystery of the world beckons me to continue on. The lack of signposts and map markers for side quests emphasizes that you’re not just doing tasks for NPCs, but a curious explorer in a living world that continues to exist whether you choose to unravel its mysteries or not. I always wanted to explore everything, if for nothing else then for the stunning views. The stunning ocean cliff views are breathtaking, but even the deep caves and dark crypts have an eerie beauty, thanks to clever lighting and an atmosphere that permeates every detail.

Coming across them unexpectedly during my explorations was one of the best aspects of the open-ended world in Dragon’s Dogma 2.
