From Old Man Clanton to Butch Cassidy, Grivz claims to have faced them all, painting a vivid picture of a wild past filled with larger-than-life adventures and outrageous escapades that blur the lines between reality and myth. His tales, while sounding ridiculous, draw players deeper into his world, inviting them to question what’s real and what’s just part of his legendary persona. Grievz is relentlessly pursuing the heads of notorious bandits, executing a daring escape from prison, hunting for lucrative bounties, engaging in thrilling cowboy duels, and intercepting train and bank robberies. He is driven to follow the path of Native American criminals who lived by their own code of justice. With each trial, he remains relentless, always looking for the next prize that will fuel his adventurous spirit and perhaps lead to a deeper purpose. The narrative is littered with names of varying recognition, adding to the complexity. New characters are introduced every fifteen minutes, only to meet their untimely end almost immediately. Complex stories are linked through a single protagonist, creating an art form of fleeting lives that briefly intersect.

Unlike in Bastion, where a voice narrated our actions, here we actively reenact the daring feats of the storyteller himself, immersing ourselves in the adventure.
“We’re completely surrounded! At least twenty of them! They crept up on us—classic Apache tactic!” Greaves proclaims with dramatic flair, and in an instant, the Indians materialize from thin air, launching a fierce volley of gunfire. The vividness of the scene and the urgency of the moment create an adrenaline rush that keeps players on the edge of their seats, eager for what comes next.
“Grandpa, what Apaches? You were tracking Cowboys!” the listener is indignant.
“I never said they were Apaches!” the narrator confidently corrects himself, and the Indians are replaced by bandits in red scarves.

The levels shift before our eyes: the old man suddenly recalls the “red maples” or unexpectedly spots a staircase leading to who knows where. Occasionally, Grievz himself outlines several potential paths the story could take, each one rich with possibility and depth. An innovative and stylish approach to intertwining narrative within action sequences can be captivating. However, it feels like the developers have overstepped their bounds. If you happen to leave an enemy unfinished, Silas won’t recall how he managed to escape from the cave. Want to engage in some shooting? Unfortunately, that won’t be possible—Grieves abruptly decides that he has run out of ammunition and must make a hasty retreat. This kind of narrative device, instead of enriching the gameplay experience, seems to impose limitations on it. As a result, it can become quite frustrating for players who are looking for a seamless blend of story and action.
One Against All: Greaves’ Dangerous Path
Greaves now operates alone – gone are the days of choosing characters with different skills and experience. Instead, we focus on developing his unique abilities, choosing one of three different paths: the Sniper, a master of rapid-fire dual-wielding weapons who excels at eliminating targets with speed and precision; the Beast Hunter, a tough shotgun and melee expert who can kill enemies in close combat and personally; or the Sniper Ranger.
Experience is gained effortlessly as you progress through the game: we earn points that allow us to improve our skills and abilities. The more creatively and spectacularly we eliminate our enemies, the more rewards we receive – just like in the adrenaline-filled action of Bulletstorm. Each encounter provides an opportunity to put together impressive combos and demonstrate our skill. However, it is a shame that the execution options are somewhat limited; Without the inclusion of telekinesis or futuristic technology, the Wild West setting seems less inventive and active than it could be.
The developers have crafted duels that are remarkably diverse and engaging. Take this particular one, for example: you’re challenged to take down two opponents at once before either of them has a chance to fire a shot. It adds layers of excitement and strategy that keep players on their toes.
In combat, Grievous evokes the character of Ray McCall from Blood Ties. While stealth may not be his forté, he certainly proves to be a formidable adversary. He possesses the ability to enter a concentrated state where time seems to slow, allowing him to analyze his surroundings. Enemies become highlighted, making them easier to target, and the atmosphere becomes charged with intensity. The level of drama escalates to breathtaking heights, reminiscent of the epic moments seen in Space Marine narratives.
Griev has a unique ability to sense death: when any other hero would inevitably meet their end, time seems to come to a standstill. He can see the bullet racing toward him, and in that critical moment, he manages to dodge it just in time. This dramatic effect not only adds tension but also occasionally saves him from the frustration of replaying sections. Interestingly, the game is designed with numerous checkpoints, making manual saves feel almost obsolete. These checkpoints appear with remarkable frequency—every ten seconds, it seems—before any intense gunfight, on every rickety bridge, and even while he navigates the rooftops of the city. This abundance allows players to explore without the constant fear of losing progress, encouraging a more adventurous and less cautious approach to gameplay.
Wisdom comes with experience, not age
Fortunately, Gunslinger manages to sidestep the Cartel’s blunder of featuring a hundred identical plastic firearms. The weaponry is sparse, much like in Blood Ties, but each rifle and revolver stands out with its own distinct character and beauty, offering players a truly satisfying shooting experience that feels rewarding and immersive.
However, it’s a pity that this enjoyment tends to fizzle out rather quickly—the campaign lasts only about 6–7 hours, and many moments begin to feel repetitive. The boss battles featuring enemies armed with Gatling guns initially seem like an exhilarating challenge, but they soon lose their excitement and novelty. The thrill of darting from one piece of cover to another captivates during the first few encounters but quickly turns into a frustrating routine. The same sentiment applies to the various environments; they are engaging and vibrant when first explored, intriguing upon a second visit, but by the third encounter, they can feel dull and uninspired. By the tenth time roaming through these settings, the initial charm transforms into irritation, making the experience less enjoyable as it becomes predictable and monotonous.
We find ourselves on a small plateau, surrounded by enemies perched on the cliffs above us.
There are no complaints about the scenery, however – each level is a visual treat that pleases the player with a fresh and well-designed landscape. We pass through vast prairies, bustling cities, rugged mountain passes, lush forests, serene lakes and dangerous bridges crossing deep chasms, all the while watching trains rush past. There is never a dull moment here; the environments are rich and varied, which keeps players engaged. The developers have carefully taken into account the mistakes made by the Cartel and introduced such a quality touch of non-linearity: players encounter forks and branches along the way. Although these paths can quickly converge into one route, and any deviation from the main storyline often leads to a quick return to the original path, the experience feels far from linear.

A great entry into the Western genre can be a bit of a challenge, especially since Silas Greaves himself doesn’t approach his story with the seriousness it deserves.
