DreamLeague Season 13 returned today with the first day of the playoffs and for the Upper Bracket there were some massive series to be played as the teams begun their journey to become Major champions in Leipzig.

Opening up the playoffs would be Evil Geniuses taking on Nigma in the first of two upper bracket series for the day. While Nigma were still looking at the top off their game ever since being victorious at the recent WePlay! Bukovel Minor, EG’s group stage run was not the best, losing to Natus Vincere in their opening series. However, with both teams still making it to the upper bracket, there would be a lot more on the line.

As the first game begun, it was clear that Nigma not only had a better draft, but were ready to execute it perfectly. While it took 26-minutes for the GG call to come out, there were no moments where EG seemed to have found their footing against a far stronger opponent. Even after a stunning first game, Nigma were completely pulled apart by EG in the next – although there were brief moments where Maroun ‘gh’ Merhej’s Earthshaker plays could have brought them back into the game, it was nowhere near enough.

With a tied up series now, we would go to game three and even with nearly one full hour on the battlefield, Nigma struggled to find much more than 12 total kills as EG destroyed the Minor winner’s and sent them down into a familiar lower bracket spot.

With the first series of the Upper Bracket over for the day, the next would be another gigantic matchup – this time between two powerhouses of the Chinese region; Vici Gaming and Invictus Gaming. Both teams were able to show some fantastic form in the group stages, following their second and third place finishes at the previous Major respectively. Now one of them would have to fight through the lower bracket in Germany.

Right from the start of the first gaming, VG took control and it seemed as iG would have no answer or any way to fight back – but for a brief moment they did and the game went the other way, although not for long. VG were meticulous in the way they played against their opponent and the first game went their way.

Much like in the opening series, the team that lost in the opening game would come back in the next and dominate. From the lanning phase and the entire game forward, iG were nearly untouchable as they secured a tied series and a decisive game three. The final upper bracket game of the day at DreamLeague Season 13 would see a third Kunkka in the series and for a third time, it would be on the losing team. While it was a much more even game, Zeng ‘Ori’ Jioyang’s amazing Huskar performance was too much for iG to fight as they would end the series 2-1.

The day is still a long way from over at the Leipzig Major with four elimination series in the lower bracket still to come. For the upper bracket, the first semi-final is now set with Evil Geniuses and Vici Gaming securing themselves a guaranteed top 6 finish in Germany.
