Brothers Joe and Anthony Russo, of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame fame, are developing an animated TV series for Netflix, based on popular trading card game Magic: The Gathering, EW.com reports.
According to the Russos, the MTG Netflix show will “expand on the stories of the Planeswalkers, which are Magic’s unique magic-wielding heroes and villains, as they contend with stakes larger than any one world can hold”. The duo will be executive producers on the show and will have Henry Gilroy (Star Wars Rebels writer) and Jose Molina (Agent Carter co-exec producer) co-write it.
“We have been huge fans and players of Magic: The Gathering for as long as it has been around, so being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us,” the Russos said in an official statement.
This is a move that’s not only new for the MTG universe, but one that might be coming at just the right time. Magic: The Gathering is on the rise through the accessibility and popularity of its new online client, MTG: Arena, and also debuted its 2019 esports circuit, featuring regular six-figure tournaments. An animated series on a leading streaming platform such at Netflix can push MTG further and even generate mainstream appeal.
There is no indication when the Magic: The Gathering Netflix series will launch, nor what will it be about. The one promo image we have features Chandra Nalaar, the poster girl for the red Planeswalkers and one of the most emblematic heroes in the MTG universe.
