The ONE Championship fighting promotion and Dentsu Inc., Japan’s largest global advertising agency, have decided to jump into esport by launching ONE eSports in 2019. One Championship plans to “invest up to US$50 million alongside other key partners into ONE eSports to create Asia’s largest global eSports Championship Series”.
The fighting promotion is well known in Asia as one of the biggest in the combat world. They recently made the headlines after signing former Bellator and UFC Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez and former UFC Flyweight champion and pound-for-pound king Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson. Two of the biggest stars in the sport of MMA.
It’s not a secret that esport is growing exponentially around the world and specifically in Asia. The recruitment of Demetrious Johnson may be directly a part of their strategy to join esport as he has been named Chief Brand Ambassador of ONE eSports. Mighty Mouse is known to be an avid twitch streamer and played at various esport events around the globe.
ONE Championship announced a 30 event schedule in some of the biggest Asian cities in 2019 including Singapore, Bangkok, Tokyo, Seoul, Jakarta, Shanghai, Beijing, Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City, and many other cities. ONE eSports will be a part of these events in select cities. ONE eSports also announced the production of live events and various video content across its global media broadcast platforms in 138 countries.
While no more details about future tournaments and events are announced, the promotion explains that they will showcase blockbuster game titles from around the world. More information can be found in their official announcement.
