The Main Event for Worlds 2019 hasn’t even started yet, and the tournament can already boast some impressive numbers. The first match of the Play-In Knockout stage between DAMWON Gaming and Lowkey Esports drew over 986K concurrent viewers, Esports Charts shows.
This is an increase of 30K concurrent viewers compared to the most watched match of the group stage, which was DAMWON vs. Flamengo. In fact, Flamengo are seen in three of the four most-watched games of the group stage.
With the Main Event upcoming, Worlds 2019 is just picking up speed, though it has a high mark to beat if it wants to become the most watched LoL World Championship to date. The 2017 and 2018 Worlds remain on the top with 2.10M and 2.05M peak viewers, respectively (not counting Chinese viewers), but it’s not impossible for their 2019 cousin to surpass them. The current edition is lauded as one of the most competitive ones in the entire history of the franchise, and carries hyped up stories such as Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok’s return to the stage, the rise of LEC and G2 Esports as one of the strongest sides to beat, and the closing of the gap between the West and the East.
The Main Event itself opens this Saturday, Oct. 12, with the first games from groups B, C, and D. With teams like SKT, Fnatic, RNGH, Team Liquid, and Invictus Gaming all playing on day 1, Worlds 2019 might be looking at some fat numbers right off the bat.
