Tonight, Team SoloMid will face Team Liquid for the NA LCS title and everyone — from fans, to analysts, to the players themselves — are drowned in hype. While every major final is an exciting affair on its own, the 2019 Spring final collects almost too many storylines.
First, there’s the team implications behind who gets the title. If Team Liquid win, they’d be on three-peat championship streak, something only their opponent TSM have done before. If TSM win, it would be their first championship since 2017 Summer and a recovery of a disastrous 2018 for the franchise.
Then, there’s the individual implications concerning Søren “Bjergsen” Bjerg and Yiliang “Doublelift” Peng. The outstanding stars in each of their teams, Bjergsen and Doublelift are both at five NA LCS titles — the most of any individual NA player — and a win on Saturday would mean a new record for the region.
A win four Doublelift would mean a fifth straight year he’s won at least one domestic championship and would be his fourth in a row. For Bjergsen, it would mean denying his rival an achievement no one would soon be able to replicate.
Embracing the hype, both org’s CEOs, Andy “Reginald” Dinh and Steve “LiQuiD112” Arhancet, have taken to social media to spew pure banter and trash talk, in the best traditions of boxing.
“Tired of PR BS. We’re gonna own them,” Dinh said, claiming that the mid lane battle between Bjergsen and Nicolaj “Jensen” Jensen won’t even be close. Arhancet, of course, was quick to fire back.
Dinh and Arhancet did not end it at just trash talk, however. On Travis Gafford’s show Hotline League, both CEO’s shook hands on a $100,000 bet that their own team will win Saturday evening.
Who will be right (and who will be $100,000 richer) will be determined tonight, 22:00 CET | 13:00 PST. Winner will take the NA LCS trophy and a seed to MSI 2019.
