Team SoloMid and Team Liquid both finished the first week of 2019 Summer Split with a neutral 1-1 record. Above them, Cloud9, Golden Guardians, and OpTic Gaming took the lead of the league.

TSM and Liquid played each other in the second match of the split, a highly anticipated rematch from the spring grand finals. A ruthless Jake “Xmithie” Puchero on Olaf delivered 10 of the 11 kills for Liquid and took the MVP praise for the match, being the key to snowballing Yiliang “Doublelift” Peng’s Xayah to a 5/0/2 KDA against a struggling Ezreal from Jesper “Zven” Svenningsen.

Despite being in top form, however, Xmithie couldn’t get Liquid to a 2-0 start in the league. On day 2, Echo Fox delivered an early upset for the split, beating the reigning champions in 29 minutes.

Echo Fox finished 6th in the spring split with a 1-1 record against Team Liquid, but given Liquid’s recent successes, including making the MSI finals, few expected the Foxes to do so well. Carried by a fed Gangplank from Colin “Solo” Earnest, Echo Fox prevailed despite Xmithie’s and CoreJJ’s 100% kill participation and secured two barons to win the game at minute 29.
