Former EU LCS org Unicorns of Love (UoL) are expected to join the CIS’ Continental League (LCL), according to sources of Turkish esports site Esporin. The report states that UoL are likely to acquire Team Just’s LCL spot and also sign prominent support player Edward “Edward” Abgaryan.
Unicorns of Love entered the EU LCS in 2015 and played two grand finals during their seven-split tenure. Despite its long history with the league, however, UoL were denied franchising for the LEC partnership program and signed a new roster to compete in domestic German competitions to limited success.
UoL’s entry to the LCL would put them back on the international League of Legends map, even if the region is considered one of the minor ones in the game. If the org acquires the key players from Vega Squadron — the reigning LCL champions — including top laner Vladislav “BOSS” Fomin and mid laner Lev “Nomanz” Yakshin, this would already make for a good start. Adding Edward would mean getting a veteran support player to potentially play alongside Ilya “Gadget” Makavchuk, who played bot lane for Vega Squadron at MSI 2019.
Edward’s tweet also suggests that he won’t be joining Gambit Gaming after all, after he was seen practicing with their AD Carry Stanislav “Lodik” Kornelyuk earlier this month.
UoL’s potential entry into LCL would be the first instance of a non-CIS organization getting involved with the region. LCL has mostly struggled at international events due to lack of investments and low salaries, but a EU-style management could be the difference maker here.
