Jin “Mystic” Seong-jun will once again compete in the LCK. The seasoned bot laner will join the roster of Afreeca Freecs, the org announced Monday, ending his five-year stint with Team WE.
The departure will be a blow for the LPL squad. Mystic was the star player on Team WE and him and mid laner Su “xiye” Han-Wei were largely responsible for WE even making the LPL playoffs, despite having an otherwise lackluster roster of players. If they don’t sign another bot laner, WE will have to look at substitute Zhao “Jiumeng” Jia-Hao, a player who only has two LPL games on his record.
Mystic announced his free agency Nov. 20 and the announcement said that WE would be trying top keep him on the roster. With the team struggling domestically, however, it is no surprise that Mystic has chosen to return to Korea.
That’s not to say Afreeca Freecs don’t have their own issues to solve. The team has had a rough 2019 season, which started even earlier with their quarterfinal elimination from Worlds to a surprising 3-0 sweep by Cloud9. In Spring 2019, AFs completely missed the playoffs, and in Summer, they finished fifth, eventually missing to secure a spot for Worlds.
Mystic is the second new signing for Afreeca this off-season after the org acquired Song “Fly” Yong-jun for the mid lane.
