Kingzone DragonX are one match away from qualifying for Worlds 2019. In the second round of the LCK Regional Qualifiers (a.k.a. the “Gauntlet”), KZ ended SANDBOX’s Worlds chances, beating them 3-1 and advancing to the Gauntlet finals to play DAMWON Gaming.
The series reminded of KZ’s elimination of AFreeca Freecs the previous round. SANDBOX showed teeth in one of the games, but the other three were absolute stomps. Jungler Moon “Cuzz” Woo-chan put out an MVP-worthy performances and snowballed his lane with early kills, which SANDBOX could never recover from.
DAMWON Gaming now stand as KZ’s final opponent in the LCK Gauntlet, and they are perhaps the one team that can stand a chance against their march. DAMWON proved themselves in the regular season, finishing second behind Griffin, and although they couldn’t stand up to SK Telecom, they might have what it takes to at least make the Gauntlet final competitive. DWG clearly had composure issues and broke down mentally towards the end of the SKT series, but the team still possesses high-level technical players, including mid laner Heo “ShowMaker” Su and Summer Split MVP, jungler Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu. At the same time, however, DWG’s experience in best-of-5’s is limited at best, while KZ’s players know how to play through a prolonged series.
The winner of the match will join Griffin and SK Telecom at the 2019 League of Legends World Championship. The match will be played Saturday, Sep. 7.
