DAMWON Gaming secured the top spot in Group D and are a lock for the Worlds 2019 playoffs. DWG went 3-0 in their second round of matches, defeating all their opponents with relative ease.
DWG’s encounter with Invictus Gaming was the only game where DAMWON felt vulnerable. Jang “Nuguri” Ha-gwon’s signature Vladimir found himself under a lot of pressure early from Kang “TheShy” Seung-lok’s Jayce, and iG sprinted to an early lead in the lane. Down bot, however, DWG had firm control and an 8-minute triple kill from Jang “Nuguri” Ha-gwon’s Akali locked the mid lane in DWG’s favor as well.
The major turn-around was a chaotic team fight at Baron. Although DWG lost their support early, a wrap around from Lee Sin and Kai’Sa stole the objective from underneath iG. The teamfight ended with the entire Chinese team wiped out. Three minutes later, another 5v5 resulted in an ace for DAMWON, with Nuguri’s Hemoplague punishing the stacked Invictus Gaming.
As Group D wraps up, Team Liquid and Invictus Gaming will play to decide who joins DAMWON in the playoffs. iG won the previous encounter but Team Liquid still have that historic upset at MSI semifinals in the back of their mind, reminding them that triumph over the reigning World Champions is possible.
