DAMWON Gaming, LCK’s third seed and arguably the strongest team in the Worlds 2019 Play-Ins, are off to a great start at the tournament. DWG defeated both Royal Youth and Flamengo eSports to finish their first day at 2-0 — in great position to exit the group as top seed.
Despite being favorites, DWG still faced some problems against Turkey’s Royal Youth. Can “Closer” Celik played such a pitch-perfect Qiyana that for some time, RYL looked like they could upset the Koreans. Through better objective control, however — and Jang “Nuguri” Ha-gwon’s fed Vladimir — DAMWON saved the game to go up 1-0 in the group.
Flamengo eSports also stood their ground against DWG as much as they could, mostly making use of some rookie teamfighting mistakes from DAMWON, but once again the solo lanes of Korea’s third seed were too strong. Going top on Renekton, Heo “ShowMaker” Su worked with Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu to bully Leonardo “Robo” Souza into early lane deficit, from where snowballing the game was a matter of time.
DAMWON now have a day to prepare for the second round of games in their groups, but if today’s results are any indication, the Korean side should be looking at 4-0 qualification into the Play-In Knockout stage.
