Did you miss anything from the last week in esports? Swamped with work or school? Busy preparing for Halloween instead of staying on the internet 24/7? VPEsports’ Stories from the Week brings you all the biggest headlines you might have missed.
TNC Predator completed an undefeated run through ESL One Hamburg to be crowned champions of the $300,000 event. The SEA team had a tough road, having to beat an in-form Alliance and survive a five-game grand final series against Gambit Esports, but on championship Sunday they did walk out $125,000 richer. An Alchemist pick by Armel Paul ‘Armel’ Tabios was the highlight of Game 5, with the hero racking up 1000 GPM by minute 15 — a rich, unstoppable force.
Ninjas in Pyjamas plan to make a region change for the rest of the season, captain Peter “ppd” Dager said.
“I wouldn’t say that we are identified with any sort of region. I feel like this is kind of how it’s been these last couple of years for most of the North American-European teams. We are planning to play in the NA qualifiers for the remainder of the season, so I guess now we are a NA team, but we have some EU roots for sure,” he added.
Evil Geniuses took their second LAN victory in the new CS:GO season after a successful trip to Turkey for StarSeries 8. EG dropped only a single map in their playoffs run to the title, beating Renegades (2-0), Fnatic (2-1) and Fnatic again in the grand finals (2-0).
Big performances from Vincent “Brehze” Cayonte, Ethan “Ethan” Arnold, and Tsvetelin “CeRq” Dimitrov drove EG to the podium, with Ethan taking the tournament MVP. CeRq himself clocked a monstrous 115.9 ADR, as he continued to forge his legacy of being one of the best young AWPers in the scene.
The 2019 League of Legends World Championship is enjoying quite the attention, as it smashed the viewership records of all its predecessors. During the quarterfinal match between SK Telecom T1 and Splyce, Worlds 2019 hit a peak of 2.5M concurrent viewers on all western platforms combined — a good 400K more than the previous record of 2.1M of Worlds 2017.
The numbers are expected to go even higher as the playoffs progress, especially when SKT and G2 Esports meet in the semifinals to decide which region will contest China for the gold.
The prolonged drama between Rick Fox and several of his Echo Fox partners and shareholders that started back in April has finally come to an end. The two warring parties came to an agreement to settle and drop the lawsuits against each other and go their separate ways.
Rick Fox has now left the organization and will found a new esports venture together with long-time friend Jace Hall. Unfortunately, having left already last Monday, Fox will likely not get any cut from the Echo Fox’s LCS slot sale, the money from which will be distributed by Echo Fox’s new General Manager.
After losing Tyler “Ninja” Blevins in August, Twitch surrenders another one of its major stars to competitor platform Mixer. Michael “shroud” Grzesiek will abandon his longtime streaming home to join the Microsoft family, saying it was “the best move for my career, straight up.”
Both Ninja and shroud mentioned several advantages Mixer has over Twitch, including the 10k bitrate cap, the non-toxic chat experience and the feeling of a fresh start. Of course, there’s also the huge pile of money that comes with such a deal.
While it’s been known some time through early Kotaku reports, an ESPN report reiterated that Overwatch 2 will be revealed at the upcoming BlizzCon 2019. The game is said to feature a PvE mode, where heroes will have talents and be able to equip items, making it vastly different than the PvP experience, or the PvE game modes Overwatch 1 has received so far. A new hero, Echo, is also expected to be released.
And finally, a crazy story of domestic violence saw Ann Perugia, a 35-year-old mom, make the headlines after she was accused of assaulting her 10-year-old son. The report states that Perugia’s son would not stop playing Fortnite instead of taking a shower, as his mother asked him to do, and after refusing her an additional time, Perugia punched him, causing his jaw to dislocate.
Perugia has been arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse with physical injury.
