The MDL Chengdu Major and the DOTA Summit season 11 Minor regional qualifiers reached the playoffs stage. From 10 teams, the event is down to six, after two days of group stage battles. In the new season, the qualifiers for the Major and the Minor preceding it are unified in one shorter, but rather confusing event. Starting with the 2019-2020 Dota Pro Circuit, Valve took full control over the qualifiers format for their tournaments, and so the teams have just about one week to fight for a ticket to either the Major or the Minor.

MDL Chengdu Major CIS closed qualifiers format:

Group Stage:

  • 10 teams
  • Two Bo2 groups of five teams each
  • Top two teams from each group advance to playoffs.
  • Third placed team from each group advances to DOTA Summit 11 CIS Qualifier.
  • Bottom two teams from each group are eliminated.
  • Eliminated teams get 10 DPC points.

Playoffs:

  • Four teams play in a double-elimination bracket.
  • All matches are played in a Bo3.
  • Two teams qualify to MDL Chengdu Major.
  • Losers advance to DOTA Summit 11 CIS qualifier.

DOTA Summit 11 CIS qualifiers format:

  • Four teams from MDL Chengdu Major CIS closed qualifier play in a double-elimination bracket.
  • All matches are played in a Bo3.
  • Eliminated teams get 20 DPC points.

The CIS qualifiers started with a little bit of drama, which eventually had MY MUTANTI receiving two default losses in the debut of their group stage. According to a couple of statements gave to cybersports.ru, MY MUTANTI asked all the teams in their group to postpone the matches as the qualifiers schedule for day one overlapped with a game they had to play at Igromir 2019, a LAN event part of a gaming exhibition in Moscow, Russia. According to MY MUTANTI all teams From group A agreed, but Virtus.pro. However, Virtus.pro’s General Manager came forward and said that all they said to MY MUTANTI was to check with the admins and request them to make a schedule adjustment rather than make a small deal between the teams, without informing the organizers.

“The qualifiers schedule has been known for a long time, any changes are made by the organizers. Last night, or first opponents contacted us directly and requested to postpone the game. We informed them that such decisions are made by the MDL admins, and if they make the appropriate changes to the tournament schedule, we will play according to the updated schedule. Unfortunately, this never happened, and today MY MYTANTY received a technical defeat,” said Roman Dvoryankin to cybersport.ru.

However, even with a free win at the start of the group stage, Virtus.pro couldn’t breach the top of their group. They got defeated 0-2 by Gambit and got draw results in the rest of the series, which placed them third overall in the group and pushed them to the third phase of the qualifiers, which represents their last shot at making to the Dota Summit 11 Minor.

In the other group Na’Vi, now playing with Pavel “9pasha” Khvastunov in the offlane had even a worse performance and got completely eliminated from the qualifiers with two defeats and two draw series.

The four teams advancing to the MDL Chengdu Major qualifiers playoffs are HellRaisers and Old but Gold from group A, joined by Gambit Esports along with Positive Guys from group B. Two of them will qualify for the first major of the season, while the other two will join VP and jfshfh178 in the Minor qualifiers playoffs.
