The International 2019 group stage has come to its conclusion after four intense days. Along with an unbelievable twisted meta developed on the first days of matches in Shanghai, China, the fans have been spoiled with many comeback stories.
After OG already made TI9 special with their Io carry run in Group A, Virtus.pro and Evil Geniuses kept the headlines in group B with their disastrous start at the most important tournament of the year. EG slowly recovered through the second day and looked like fully awaken after Artour “Arteezy” Babaev’s 1vs 5 rampage in the second game versus Vici Gaming. With today’s 2-0 victory over Ninjas in Pyjamas, the NA juggernauts have secured themselves an upper bracket slot into the playoffs. But the biggest recovery was made by Virtus.pro, who at the beginning of the final day in the group stage they were in danger of a possible very early elimination. Up until today, VP’s only two clean victories were against Infamous and NiP.
Opening last day with a draw vs EG was not what they wished for, but given the other results in their group and most importantly, thanks to RNG’s one game taken from Infamous, they cleared the danger zone. VP’s last two game series in the group was versus Fnatic, and he CIS kings went with standard picks ,playing their hearts out to join the upper bracket. Their 2-0 victory on the last day brought VP a total of 8 points and propelled them on the fourth place in the group, while Fnatic, Na’Vi and infamous have all finished just behind them, with a total of 7 points.
PSG. LGD Gaming, the top seed team in Group A will now have to decide who they want to face against in the upper bracket quarterfinals between EG and VP. For OG, the winners of group B, the decision looks a bit easier as they have to pick between Newbee and TNC. At the end of all group stage matches, the group winners will announce their choices and the TI9 playoffs bracket will be released shortly after. So, stay tuned!
