EPICENTER’s upper bracket finals would be a hotly contested series between DreamLeague Major winners, Vici Gaming and TI7 victors, Team Liquid with the winner claiming a guaranteed top 2 finish at the event.
Both VG and Liquid were looking extremely strong in the latter parts of the Dota 2 Pro Circuit, getting brilliant results at a few tournaments and punishing their opponents in the group stages in Moscow. Now the two powerhouses would meet and while both are already heading to The International 2019, the stakes were still extremely high.
VG seemed to be almost unstoppable in the opening game of the series as they utilised an amazing Sven from Zhang ’Paparazi’ Chengjun to dominate Liquid’s lineup. There were a few brief moments where Liquid looked like they might turn things around, but in the end, they could not fight and would now be one game away from dropping to the lower bracket. However, being the TI champions that they are, Liquid turned up the heat in the next game and left VG dumbfounded. The Chinese team were completely outplayed and the series was tied up at 1-1 with a decider on the way.
The final game of the series was a beautiful display of Dota 2 prowess by a team that looked set to win another Major this season; Vici Gaming. The entire team worked perfectly together but most importantly it was an Omniknight pick from Zhou ‘Yang’ Haiyang that was un-countered by Liquid. It took little over half an hour but VG were unrelenting as they secured the series 2-1.
With their victory, Vici Gaming claim the first spot in the grand finals of the EPICENTER Major while Team Liquid will drop down into the lower bracket finals where they await their challenger. Tomorrow we will see a day of eliminations as three teams will exit the Major.
