MDL Disneyland® continued to say goodbye to teams as the first day in front of the live audience came to a close – the victors would move into the top 8 of the event and the losers would be eliminated.

The underdog story that never was

The second half of the day kicked off with Team Liquid taking on paiN Gaming. While Liquid had not been looking all too strong throughout the Dota 2 Pro Circuit season, the team are known to perform well when it matters most – and they had been. paiN on the other hand, were just coming off eliminating Chaos Esports Club and were looking to show that they were the South American force to be reckoned with.

The SA squad went into the series as underdogs but they seemed destined to take game one as they pushed Liquid back constantly. Without fail, paiN took fights around the map as Leonardo ‘Leo’ Viana’s Anti-Mage tore through the TI7-winner’s lineup. But one mistake was all it took to change the course of the game, as he blinked into a creep wave to farm and Liquid took full advantage. By then the Drow + Medusa lineup of Liquid was too strong to fight against and paiN conceded the game. Unfortunately for the South Americans, their Cinderella story was not to gain any momentum as Liquid completely controlled the second game – and after a valiant hold from paiN, they had no choice but to call GG.

Liquid move into the top 8 of the MDL Disneyland® Major while paiN’s first Major with this roster comes to an end sadly.

Major victors versus Mumbai’s champions

The final series of the day would be an epic China versus China battle with Vici Gaming taking on Keen Gaming. Both teams were coming off the high of winning tournaments – VG with the previous Major and KG taking ESL One Mumbai 2019. There would be a lot to play for, for both teams, but only one would progress into the top 8 at MDL Disneyland®.

While the first game lasted a significant amount of time, it was not due to a tough matchup at all but rather due to meticulous play from VG and KG having no way to do much at all. From the beginning of the game, Vici took control and never let go as they destroyed the Keen lineup continuously for over half an hour before Keen threw in the towel. There was no contest in the series as VG continued to dominate in the next game. KG were unable to compete with the recent Major victors and quickly went down 2-0.

With that, Keen Gaming exit the MDL Disneyland® Major while Vici Gaming march on forward in the lower bracket to face Team Liquid next.

The Major continues tomorrow as we return to the upper bracket before two more teams will be eliminated from the event. Don’t forget that we also have an epic competition running where you could land yourself a TI9 Battle Pass.
