Alliance had already unfortunately met their demise at The International 2019 and as evening progresses in Shanghai, China, three more teams would see their hopes and dreams come crashing down. Team Liquid and Fnatic would be the next to battle in a best-of-one and the losing team would be sent home early.
Both Fnatic and Liquid had similar seasons through the Dota 2 Pro Circuit in some ways – Fnatic having semi-decent finishes at multiple events but fading away towards the later Majors. On the other side of the coin, Liquid were barely present in the DPC until they made an amazing showing at EPICENTER after the addition of Aliwi ‘w33’ Omar to their roster.
Unfortunately for both teams, their group stages at TI9 were far from average, as they both struggled to make it onto the main stage. The match to determine who would be the second team eliminated from the event in the lower bracket was an extremely close affair, as neither team were willing to give up too much ground to the other.
While the match had a fairly slow start, going back and forth for an elongated period, by half an hour, Liquid were in control. Even with the Enigma Black Hole and a great lineup of heroes, Fnatic were unable to quelle the constant threat that came from Liquid’s Gyro + IO. It took a little over 40-minutes for the game to end but when it did, Fnatic were left on the outskirts of The International.
Team Liquid will move on in the lower bracket now to face another Southeast Asian squad, TNC Predator but sadly for Fnatic, they will end their TI9 run in 13th-16th place.
