After BOOM Esports were able to take down Geek Fam yesterday, they earned themselves a third series against Fnatic at ESL One Birmingham Online: Southeast Asia – this being the grand final of the event.
Both BOOM Esports and Fnatic had already met twice at ESL One Birmingham Online: SEA; once in the group stages, which saw BOOM take a strong 2-1 victory, before FNC claimed revenge in the upper bracket finals a few days ago. Now the two teams would have a best-of-five series to determine who the best was, and the winner would also be crowned as the Southeast Asia champion of ESL One Birmingham Online.
All the odds were in FNC’s favour going into the series and right from the start, they showed exactly why. Even against an extremely strong BOOM draft, FNC stood firm and played at their own pace to take game one – as Kam Moon’ Boon Seng’s Death Prophet remained unscathed after 36-minutes at 14-0-16. However, BOOM were resilient and played a magnificent game two, keeping themselves ahead in the net worth and securing a victory to tie the series.
Game three was fairly back-and-forth, with both teams getting completely team-wiped at one stage of the game – but it was FNC who secured a sizeable lead and BOOM had no way to really put a dent in it. Before long, BOOM had no choice but to throw in the towel, placing Fnatic on series and championship point. What would be the final game of the series was also the fastest, finished in a little under half an hour as Fnatic gave BOOM absolutely no chance to gain a foothold.
A perfect Treant Protector fifth pick from Fnatic along with a few small mistakes from BOOM would see Fnatic claim a 3-1 series victory and thus be crowned as the ESL One Birmingham Online: SEA champions – claiming their second ESL One SEA title in two months.
