With the first Major of the Dota 2 Pro Circuit season kicking off earlier today, one team from Group B would book their spot in the upper bracket of the playoffs after some fantastic action on the opening day.
Group B had an amazing mix of teams with Alliance, Vici Gaming, Fnatic and Team Spirit all fighting for the opening day spoils of an upper bracket playoff spot at the MDL Chengdu Major. Alliance and VG would be the first to find victory in their opening series but neither team had an easy time taking down their opponents. While Fnatic threw a Daryl Koh ‘iceiceice’ Pei Xiang Pudge at Alliance in their decisive game, it was not enough to stop the brilliance of Nikolay ‘Nikobaby’ Nikolov who got his tournament off to a fantastic start. On the other side of things in the group, VG had a small hiccup when they faced the ex-Positive Guys squad. The CIS squad were considered underdogs of the group but managed to take a game off the Chinese squad – but would ultimately lose the series.
Coming into the winner’s match, Alliance seemed to be calm, composed and ready to reach the playoffs as they destroyed VG in the opening game. However, VG were equal to the challenge in the next as they tied the series and would take us to a decisive third game. While Alliance looked far more dominant at first, VG seemed to finally find their footing – just in time to give Zhou ‘Yang’ Haiyang a fantastic birthday present.
A sub-20-minute game three would be what it took to see Vici Gaming claim the top spot in Group B and secure their upper bracket spot in the playoffs – which includes a break for nearly two days before they play again. For Alliance, the Major is far from over as they will come back tomorrow and fight against either Team Spirit or Fnatic as they attempt to secure an upper bracket showing.
The action from the Chengdu Major nowhere close to being over for today as now we head over to Group C and D action as more teams find their way into the upper bracket of the playoffs.
