It’s a wonderful turn of events for the boys from down under. Renegades have secured themselves a spot in the New Champions Stage of the StarLadder Major in Berlin after an 0-2 start to complete the reverse sweep.
Kicking off the Legends stage, Renegades went down in a closely contested match against NRG 16-14, a match which many claim Renegades had in the bag at one point.
The Australian and New Zealand mix would put up another tough fight against AVANGAR in the second round but would ultimately lose 16-13 to themselves in elimination matches from that point forward.
Their first opponent was that of DreamEaters, a team that surprised many coming out of the CIS region by making it through to the Legends Stage and taking down some high quality opponents. It would end 2-0 in favor of Renegades and set them up for a match against FaZe.
FaZe didn’t make it easy for the boys, taking the first map to double overtime, dominating Nuke, and then pushing it to all 30 rounds for map three. In the end, Renegades would take the 16-14 on Vertigo and 2-1 for the series.
Moving into the 2-2 pool, the two teams had reached the finish line and only one could cross. G2 let Vertigo slide through and would come to regret it as Renegades took the 1-0 lead moving into G2’s map pick of Dust2. They’d bounce back and win their own pick by the same 16-11 score line to push the series to the last and final map to decide whose Major run would end here.
Strong performances out of Jay “Liazz” Tregillgas and Joakim “jkaem” Myrbostad helped propel Renegades to a 16-9 victory and a berth into the New Champions Stage.
