The Chinese leg of ESL one Birmingham Online is getting closer to the group stage ending and while three teams are ahead of the pack with undefeated performances, for Team Aster and Longinus there is no hope for a spot in the playoffs.
Aster and Longinus got seeded in Group A along with PSG.LGD and Royal Never Give Up, and although they still have a series scheduled for tomorrow, May 28, they can’t change anything about their tournament faith as the last match-up is a duel between themselves for the honorable single victory in the event. Aster began the group stage run with a one-hour long first game against PSG.LGD, doing everything they could to stop the siege coming from a Lycan-Dragon knight line-up. However, their hopes got shattered once they started to lose the Divine Rapiers, which could have potentially turned the game in their favor. After the tense first battle, they lost the second game in under 30 minutes to a super aggressive Queen of Pain from Lu “Maybe” Yao, who was flashing his shiny new Battle Pass Arcana.
The second series for Aster was held today against RNG. and once again it started with a loss to a DK. They controlled the game for the first 20 minutes, but the turnaround came at the 25 minute mark when the Dragon Knight got the black form and became impossible to kill. On the verge of elimination, Aster tried to outlast RNG in the second game with an Arc Warden, but they underestimated the save tools inside the RNG line-up, as well as their team fight power, and were forced to play from behind from early stages. They never recovered and had to admit defeat with a negative 0-4 overall game score in the competition.
Longinus, a team of young recruits guided through their first competitive experience by the scene veteran Yang “InJuly” Xiaodong, secured their spot in the event via regional qualifiers. Unfortunately for them, they couldn’t replicate the qualifier campaign success when pitted against the top teams in their region. Along with Aster, they exit the competition with a 0-4 streak and also with the fastest loss, registered against PSG.LGD who took them down in just 17 minutes.
In Group B, only CDEC Gaming can start already to think about playoff strategies. They are at the top of the group with a 2-1 victory over EHOME and a clean 2-0 swipe over Invictus Gaming. EHOME and iG are for now tied on the second place the group with an overall 1-1 series score, and most likely their head to head match-up from Thursday, May 8, will decide which one will carry on to the playoffs. Sparking Arrow Gaming are at the bottom of the group with no games won so far.
