After the release of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, the game is getting it’s first expansion – ‘Lords of the West’ – which will feature two new civilizations and three new campaigns. The expansion will cost $9.99 and will be released on the 26th of January 2021. Details regarding the expansion can be found here.
The two new civilizations which will be bracing the game are Burgundians and Sicilians; both European civilizations. While Burgundians are a cavalry civilization, Sicilians are an infantry civilization. The unique units and technologies for both civilizations have been shown below, but the entire technology tree has not yet been divulged yet. Let’s take a quick look at what the two new civilizations have to offer.
Rise from a mere duchy to the marvel of Western Europe through economic might, cultural achievement, and the use of advanced military technology and tactics. The Burgundian unique unit is the Coustillier, a cavalry unit that utilizes a powerful shock attack when charging into battle!
Experience the diverse cultures and martial spirit of the Mediterranean’s crossroads as you build one of the most coveted kingdoms in medieval Europe. The Sicilian unique unit is the Serjeant, a hardy infantry unit that can construct the formidable Donjon.
At first glance, Burgundians seem like a civilization more suited for 1v1s as their unique tech offers a mid/late game gold gain, which is invaluable in 1v1 games, but not so much in team games as trade is the way to go for endless gold. Not that the added gold won’t be good, but not as good as it will be in solo games.
Sicilians also offer bonus gold, but they do it for the entire team, not just for themselves. A sudden influx of gold can be a valuable boost for the entire team to build on the already existing army and overwhelm the enemy. A player with 50 military units stands to gain 750 gold, which is 10 knights or around 17 Arabalesters.
The team bonus for neither of the civilizations has been revelead, so there is an element of surprise around both civilizations which will be lifted on the release of the expansion. Although theory crafting is fun, the details of how the civilizations perform in different scenatios will be evident after the expansion releases and players get to play with them. One thing is for sure, Spirit of the Law will have two new civilizations to overview.
The new campaigns are fully voiced campains which are:
- Edward Longshanks
- The Grand Dukes of the West
- The Hauntevilles
If you are one to love the campaings, this expansion has an added bonus for you.
